Now in my garage 94 FD, 28K Miles, Touring, All Original - Super Clean

Just picked her up today, don't have a name for her yet, but I will have to come up with something soon. . . thanks for the tips I got from the bros on the board. I took the car to John @ Protech Performance in Austin yesterday to have HASS check out the car.

They told me to replace the hoses under the manifold and to replace my hoses from my turbos - for reliablity. I asked about a downpipe and they said they have not done one in a long time - most FDs already have them they "joked". Said the car is in amazing condition. They made a few other suggestions, but said the biggest would the hoses and downpipe.

I am taking her to a local detailer and have them see if they can get the color looking good on the mirrors and bumpers.

This car has been garaged all it's days. The rubber on the glass sunroof still looks and feels new. The leather looks fresh.

I am not sure if I will tint the windows . . . but I can not stand the sun in my cars.

Any other tips and ideas would be great!!

I have a pretty clean 94 also. However it has 78K and did not have a downpipe either or boost gage, you will want the latter also. I was wondering if anyone else knew what month they started to produce 95's. Mine was built in Oct 94 which I would think was close. As you get in this more you will see why I am hoping that the later the car the more improvements they made and the less problems you can expect. I am thinking they made the cars run richer so there is less chance of running lean and ruining the engine. Might just be a tweak on the fuel profile but at 78 K mine it's running strong.

Great buy dude although not sure what to think of the previous owner. I mean to have such beauty and not drive it is something I can't relate. I have two fd's one with 52 k all original and one I am selling next week with 93k.

Don't replace the hoses under the intake manifold unless you have some specific trouble. With 28k miles the stock hoses will still be in good condition. You'd likely be doing more harm than good.

The only IC hose you'll need to replace is the 2.75" coupler at the y-pipe to crossover pipe.

I've had over 20 FDs and I know my stuff.

Can you send me a link on where to purchase? Is this the same hose they told me to replace on the turbo? Also do you guys have any links on how to remove the stereo, I want to put in an ipod controller and alpine head unit. I have read about the line converter to utilize the bose amps/speakers.

What about the downpipe? Should i replace that?

One more thing, my driver side door lock is jacked. Is it easy to replace? Other than that can't think of anything else . . .


What size 18" wheels can I put on? I want the wheels wider to fill in the wheel wells .. . what is the offset? What size tires can I use?

free advise... use Viton hoses unless u just want to replace them every few yrs. Mcmaster sells them by d ft and hightemphoses too if i am not mistaken. They r not cheap but they will just about last 4ever. Approx. cost will be 250-300 bucks.. if all okay spend that money installing a water temp. sensor.... now that would be money well spent

Congrats on a great purchase! And DO post pics when you can.

My advice: Chill out a little and don't necessarily start "looking for trouble", take a deep breath, just go drive the car for a while, and formulate a plan on mods you might want to make. Do your research, talk to fellow FD owners when/where you can find them.
I wouldn't even replace the silicone coupler hose off the Y-pipe unless it is cracked and leaking boost....unlikely with such a low mileage car. Please describe what you mean by "the driver's side door lock is jacked" and be more specific so we can maybe help you. There are several things that routinely happen to the lock/handle/control rods that are easy to fix. I myself actually had to disassemble the lock's tumblers, and removed about half of them, to even be able to get the key to turn....so you see what I mean about needing specifics.
Also, I would take a ride in an FD with 18" wheels and tires to see if you REALLY want to go that route. In my experience, you will suffer ride quality....most combos like this are MUCH harsher than the stock 16".

Mazda did make lots of changes and IMO the best cars are from 94. However regardless of the year if it's well sorted you'll have no problems. These cars are not nearly as fragile as some folks make them out to be. In fact as a high performance car it's pretty damn reliable if left in STOCK (I repeat STOCK) condition.

So you can leave it alone and enjoy a great car or start modding it and enjoy a REALLY great car with lots of headaches.

i chose the second one, and boy does it love to give headaches. Sometimes i wish i would have just left it with full exhaust, intake and power fc at 12 psi. lol. Then i realize how slow it would be in comparison, and the headaches aren't so bad.

When you do the downpipe, have the downpipe sent out first for ceramic coating.

Update . .

Detailer called and said the car is taking a long time to "buff" out. I wanted all the swirls gone. I think he is just going for a long cruz.

I will try to tighten the hose that he said needs replacing. It is leaking a little oil close to the hose clamp. Hass said it is leaking boost.

I had the plugs replaced when I had PTP do a diag on it. I wonder if I should have the wires changed. the car seems like it is running a little rough. It HAULS a$$, but something seems off to me. Could be I don't have a feel for rotaries . . ??

BTW, took it out last night to Sonic, the local rice boyz were going INSANE!

It was certainly spinning heads.

Now that i have one been looking for one on the road . . . have yet to see one. It has only been one day.

I agree with Bajaman; don't be in such a rush to go with 18" wheels. They may look cool, but your ride quality and traction over rough surfaces will suffer greatly. If you must go for aftermarket wheels, I'd look at 17s.
