So, rain water flooded my car last night. I need help!
So I need help. Here's the story.
Buddy: Hey you wanna come over and drink some beer, I just rented some movies.
Me: It's raining, but sure
*spend the night at his house*
5:30am *knock on the door*
It's his neighbor
Neighbor: There's a car in the street and it's flooding.
Me: ****! that's my car.
*runs outside*
There's my baby, half way under water. (on a side note, while typing this i just spilled my gatorade all over me.)
So we push it up the street about a 1/4 mile to get it out of the knee deep freezing cold water my body was completely numb. I let it sit for a while until the sun is out. I open the doors and hatch and let my car air out (inside was soaked up to the dash including my excellent condition R1 suede seats and mint carpet) At this point i started my car and it ran a little rough with a bunch of water coming out the exhaust, since it was submerged. After that i make a few passes up and down the street (now clear of water) spooling up the turbos. Everything seemed fine (except i need a new battery since the one in there is shot now) I'm driving home and the check engine light starts to flicker. The car starts bucking....BAD. Making some god aweful noises. It smooths out then does it again...smooths out and does it again. For the most part I had no power. Then i'd regain power but then it'd go right back into the vicious cycle. so now it's got a rough idle (needle sits at 0 and bounces). So where should i start? I don't think the motor is blown...yet. I can hear my turbos spooling up. As of right now though, it still has the rough idle problem and doesn't want to run when i try to drive it. Any ideas? I did notify my insurance company.
Here's a fucked up part. My buddies neighbor said he came and knocked on our door around 1030pm to tell me the water was rising in the street, but we didn't hear him. So he then went to go get his video camera to video tape the whole thing. Although it's funny because he recorded me running out and jumping over, what seemed to be a small puddle, and landing in thigh deep water. My nuts turned into raisens.
Thanks for any help, I'll try and get pictures up soon.
P.S. Now I'm going to go change out of my gatorade-soaked clothes. /shitty day

Lmao .. sorry but the mental image i had made me puke with laughing haha.
On a serious note when we wash engine bays and the plugs and leads get soaked in mx5/miata's we have the same simptoms, we can drive the car some miles then the engine temp makes traped water evaporate and shift to a more critical place, that in turn makes the car run like crap.
Try drying your plugs and leads proerly first and see if that makes the difference.

In all honesty, you shouldn't have started it without letting it sit for a good 2 days or so in a dry area..but since you did:
-Replace battery, clean terminal clamps well.
-Pull every plug you can in the bay, and dry them throughly. Clean off the surface it mates too.
-Clean/dry spark plugs and wires throughly
Other than that, your air filter could've been sucking up a bunch of water. Until it dries, the car will not want to run well.
-Last hope.......compression test? :|

Cherry Point is in NC. I live in Va and we got a ton of rain from the NorEaster today. My house sits several feet higher than our street. If didn't park my FD in the carport, it would be full of water.

MIKE NO!!!!!!!!!!!......i guess you are going to need an engine after all....mines going to be coming out if you are serious about it.
The only 2 modded FD's in my town are me and my cousin mike here.....well when he's home that is.
BTW wasn't that a car you got from Fritz Flynn?

I personally would'nt have started the car until I changed all the fluids and cleaned the plugs. If the water was up to the dash, I'm sure your ecu is shot. Fuse box on the driver's side may be shorting things out too. If you have access to compressed air, dry out all the fuse boxes and plugs you can before rust starts to set on them. After drying you can coat the contacts with lithium grease to prevent rust.

your lucky you didn't hydro-lock the engine at the same time you probably filled all of you solenoids and god know what else with water.....you might as well tear the whole thing down and blow out every thing you can.....just letting it sit won't get rid of all the water trapped in the rats nest and various actuators....I would also drain the gas tank and replace all of the filters.

Will work for horsepower
As to the interior check with home repair, smoke and water damage people who do insurance work. There is a dehumidifier that can remove the water and hidden moisture from the inside. If you dont get it dry it will continue to get worse! The smell and mold will start to get bad. Check with your insurance co. Good luck.

I contacted my insurance. They made a note of it, so if my motor is dead...or goes dead in like a month. They'll cover it. I'd hate to say it, but i'd like to see them total it. I plan on keeping the car anyways so a salvage title wont hurt me any. Right now, I'm not anywhere near my car (thanksgiving) so hopefully i'll start doing a better job of drying things out. First thing is first when i get back though....compression test
Josh: stand by, I might need that motor.
