Not a good noise from my engine!

my engine is making a bad noise when i start it. it is only right when i start the car for about 2 seconds. its hard to explain the noise, i would have to say its like a screeching/high pitched grinding noise. i know it could probobaly be alot of things im just wondering if anyone else has had this problem n might know what it is.

I'd look into the belts or the pulleys and see if you can narrow the sound down

Yeah sounds like it could be a worn or loose belt. Id probably have a friend start the car while you are over the engine to see if you can narrow it down to an area in the bay like TpCpLaYa mentioned.

if it's mostly on startup, it is likely belt related

have you cleaned your engine bay with water lately?

sometimes water gets into pullies (blast it out with an air gun)

or belts can slip (tighten or replace them)

I'm surprised that nobody think that it's probably the starter that not return fast enough to it standby position!!!

Good luck!

My 2 cents

it might be if it is more of a grinding noise than screeching noise. How long does it last? If it lasts for just a second after start up it might be but if it lasts for a little while than its probably a belt issue. Does it get louder when you give it gas?

You know that's a good point that's been raised. I had an issue a little while ago where there was a HORRIBLE grinding/screeching noise but it didn't go away. I finally tracked it down to the IGNITION switch! The switch was bad enough that while the car was in 'run' the starter was still being fed power causing the problem. It was such a heart wrenching feeling until I figured it out and fixed it with a new switch....however I still think this problem is a belt/bearing maybe. Get some stethoscope ears and place it near each of the pulleys at start up to see if you can pick up the noise.

I had the same problem as you described and it was a worn out belt. When i accidentally spilled a little coolant on the belt it made the noise worse
