Not Good news........
Merry Christmas everyone..... Mine isn't....Last night.Christmas Eve...I was in the heat of battle with an NSX.....At a red light and open road ahead...First to second pretty close..Upon full boost in second KAAABLAAM!!!!!!!! Detonation....Sounded like a double barrel lighting off..No other thing it could be..Now I have rough idle @10psi (stock seals) and hard to keep it running.Everything seemed ok. No creep or boost spike when it happened. Not too cold out (about 50 degrees). I must of got some bad gas. Or it was time...60000 miles on original engine. Luckily it seems the turbos are ok. They are still making 12/8/12.. Only tried it couple of times to make sure. I am going to have to savefor a few months and ship the motor down to Pettit for porting and seals. Man.life w' out my car is gonna be different for while. The daily beater is going to be beaten
Any suggestions on what i should do while the motor is pulled...I know I gotta fix the oil pan leak and check the motor mounts...What else to be more reliable?? Thanks...
93 Base montego blue w/ 60000 completed miles

Sorry to hear that dude. Every time I drive hard, I am holding my breath. Hope mine wouldn't just pop like that. Make sure u got all your reliability mods done while the engine is out. And when u get the car back, routine maintenance it to death!!!!
. . . .This may be the dumbest question you may have read, but can a motor run after detonation? I pushed it hard once after shifting from 1st to 2 going down a slight incline, and the loudest *POP* reverbed down from the engine to the exhaust. was that pop my motor? I have been driving on my motor since then for maybe a month, saving up for a new motor anyhow. I still put out the same horsepower (246) bc i had my car dyno'd a few days after that happened. But i havent been driving the car for 2 weeks now since some lady ran into my car.
Would a motor still make that much power after it has detonated? I havent had a chance to get a compression run bc of $$ situations. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hmmm...I dunno if the car would still be driveable with a detonated motor.
Have you checked your boost sensor? You might have already done this but there are a lot of people that overlook it. When the vacuum hoses come off the boost sensor, the car runs horrible, almost like one rotor is running, very similar feeling to detonation.
If you haven't, look behind the intake elbow, where the elbow meets the throttle body towards the firewall, there is a small black box that says "sensor - boost" on it. Check the underside and see if the vacuum line came off....
If you already did this...I dunno...I guess sorry about your luck

No, my car runs just fine, theres no rough idle or anything. Thats why i sorta got worried. There are no symptoms of detonation, or anything wrong! But the motor did pop extremely loud, which is why i got as little worried. Maybe it was a backpressure fireball or sorts? Im not sure what it was, but i guess it wasnt detrimental to my cars performance afterwards, even to this day. Oh well, i will get the motor rebuilt sometime soon anyhow, as im nearing 70k miles on the original motor.
You shouldn't have had any problems with detonation with those mods. Must have been a bad tank of gas or something freak like a clogged fuel filter. Make sure you change your filter and get your injectors cleaned when you do your motor. Did your motor make the loud pop while under load or in between shifts?

'Sup Guys,
Weird things can pop off of our cars under boost...something similar happened to me the other day
I was coming hard out of second into 3rd, then BAM! I heard this loud pop....afterwards, the car still ran fine and had good boost, but I could hear this very loud hissing noise every time I got on the boost. It turns out that the air supply hose had actually popped off the main cat! How's that for exhaust back pressure, huh...Really makes me want to hurry up and replace my stock catback
Anyway, I know that isn't G's problem since he said he has full exhaust, but maybe you should just keep an eye out for something that might have popped off. My first thought was also the MAP sensor hose, as Pressurized suggested.
On the topic of running after detonation, I think it really depends on the severity of the damage caused by the detonation. Every now and again, you get really lucky and detonate without damaging anything. Or sometimes, the detonation only damages the apex seal without hurting much else. The idle is rough, but you can still drive it quite well. I know of one modded RX-7 owner who ran a low 13 sec 1/4 mile on his dead motor. With his mods, it should have been faster, but hey, he was still faster than a stock RX-7
Of course, sometimes the damage from detonation is so severe that pieces get into places they shouldn't be and things seize up...then, of course, you can't drive it afterwards.
So yes, it is possible to drive your car after blowing the motor, depending on the extent of the damage. But if the motor is blown, I wouldn't recommend driving it, even if it is driveable. You could end up damaging more parts and making your rebuild cost higher.
