no psssst...

Hey, I'm kinda new to posting here, but I've been using the forum for quite some time...lot's of good info!

Anyways, I've had my '93 for about two months and about 4000miles. It is bone stock and has just over 100,000 miles. When I first got the car in April, I heard the BOV doing its thing every time I shifted. However, about two weeks ago, I was driving along and...nothing. The turbos still spool up and the car still goes, just no "pssst." So what could be causing this? Do wastegates go bad? Could it be something else? Is there anything I can do to see where the problem is coming from before I start taking stuff apart?

Secondly, and this might be related to the wastegate thing, but after I rev the engine (either driving or unloaded with the clutch in), instead of falling straight to idle, the engine RPMs bounce from ~200 to ~1000 before it eventually levels out. Sometimes when it does this it stalls on me. What's going on?

Sorry for the lenght of this post, but I know you guys will be able to help me. Thanks in advance!

The wastegate is not related to either of your problems. If you had a wastegate problem, the only thing you'd notice would be SEVERE overboosting or rediculous lag.

BOVs do go bad. To test, remove the BOV, get a MityVac or similar vacuum application and suction a few inHg. When vacuum is applied, you should be able to blow through it. When nothing or pressure is applied, you should not be able to blow through it. If this is not how yours works, replace it. The Blow Off Valve protects your turbos against compressor surge, and they won't last as long without one.

As for your idle problem, check your vacuum hoses. In fact (and this could be the cause of both), check the vacuum hose going to the blow off valve. A leaky line will make your idle loopy, but probably higher than normal.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I've been reading the board ever since I even thought about getting an RX-7 (about 9months now) and still don't understand how those vacuum hoses work. I'll have to look into it then.

And I wouldn't be surprised if I blew one out. When I did a compression test on the engine I poked around those hoses and they were hard as a rock. Besides, I'm probably the first owner of the car to drive it to redline. I'm the third owner and I bought the car from a 50-ish second grade teacher who just drove it to work every day!

Also, one more question: what is the difference between a wastegate and BOV? I thought they performed similar tasks?
