I tried searching but didn't really find any good answers to what I need. These are going to seem like very basic and maybe stupid questions to some of you guys, but I am new to RX7's and I'm interested in buying one. So if you have any comments (about my stupidity) that don't pertain to my questions, just keep them to yourself please Okay here goes. I obviously love the RX7 and have been a big fan of them for years, now that I have the money to buy one I am starting to second guess myself. All I really know is that maybe 30-40% of the ones for sale have new motors or rebuilt motors. I guess I just want to know what causes this and does it happen to all RX7's. I'm interested in 93-95 only. I plan to drive the car daily, but still take very very good care of it. Is the RX7 a good daily driver, or is it just better for those who use it as a weekend car. I'm coming from a MKIV Supra NA, so I need reliability, but still want power and looks. I really am interested in learning what causes the motor problems, and how often it really happens, and any ways to prevent them from happening. Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated. I basically want to know if I buy a low mileage original motor RX7 (under 25k miles), how long is it likely to last before it would need major engine work or a new motor. Thanks a ton guys. I bought my rx7 in 2002. It had 84'000 miles, and it need'ed a new motor and turbos. The best thing I can tell you is look for one with low mileage, or rebuilt motor. Stay away from the high mileage stock motor. Stock motor's dont last long (well taken care of maybe 110'000.)

The best advice is to treat any 3rd gen as a project car to work on in your own time and save up a couple extra thousand dollars and get a used civic/accord/camry/tercel/corolla/saturn as a daily driver so if the 7 breaks down, you will have something to drive around. Owning one is an expensive hobby and if it breaks down you will either want to do it yourself or take it to an expert and experts cost money and take a while so that is why you need a DD

 

Remember that the FD RX-7 is now at least 12 years old. A lot has happened to them all since 1992 so dont expect perfection or a new car. Be reasonable in your expectations.
