New RX-7 Owner needs compression??

Hey guys,
I just purchased a 93 rx and am having a few problems. First off, the car idles really really rough. So I took it to a shop to have a compression check done. The mechanic used a conventional gauge, and he didn't know if it made a difference or not. The numbers are kind of wierd. The rear cylinder is pushing 40 psi and the front is 70 psi.
The mechanic said this was wrong. I'm not sure I trust the guy. So I just wanted know if the cyclinders are supposed to be the same. And can it be done with a conventional gauge.

Thanks!

You can do a compression test with a conventional compression tester. Your numbers, assuming the test was done somewhat correctly, are very low. A healthy motor holds around 100 psi on boths rotors. There are no cylinders by the way. It sounds like like you need a rebuild. Add another $4000-$5000 to your purchase price. Sorry.

Call me crazy, but he doesn't sound like he's doing the work himself. The cost of a rebuilt motor including the R&R could easily top that.

thanks for the info, i found out by removing the stator valve in the test compressor u can watch all three stages, i ended up with about 70 in the front and about 100 in the aft. a guy in massachutes is rebuilding the motor. the guy i bought the car from is a good guy and is going to pay for it.

Yeah, you got a deal on the previous owner paying for the re-build!! I would *seriously* do alot of research on the best way to break in the freshly rebuilt motor though, there are several threads discussing this (I believe).. A couple hours of good research on here just might help save you a LOT of trouble in the future.

Just my $.02

Grats on getting a 7! (I can't wait till I get back from the Gulf and see mine..)
