new to the rotary world...

So i am parting out my boosted crx as we speak and im now in the market for an FD. Just looking on some tips and pointers as to what i should look for in the car, what the weak link is on rotaries, etc..

Hows the power on these cars? Reliable? Gas mileage? Handling? Is the car worth the money?

In the near/far future i plan on a rx7 store gt35r, aem ems, greddy titanium catback, tein suspension, 99 spec body kit, and way down the road a street or race port, and fuel system...

Any feedback on these mods? I mean i dont even have the car yet, i just want some opinions on it before i start searching.

thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have to search too much if you find the stickied FAQ thread. Read the topics under "Advice" and reliability mods.

Don't buy an AEM. It just doesn't work well with these cars. Apexi PFC works much better and can be tuned by a large number of rotary tuners.

Hows the power on these cars?

250bhp
210fpt

Reliable?

no, i live in fear of something going wrong every time i get in it

Gas mileage?

17mpg city
23mpg highway

Handling?

50-50 weight distribution, just about the best handling you'll ever see in a car

Is the car worth the money?

depends on the kind of person you are...if you enjoy spending countless hours on small fixes that make you want to pull yer hair out, and like the feeling of always being in fear of your engine blowing, than its for you.

In the near/far future i plan on a rx7 store gt35r, aem ems, greddy titanium catback, tein suspension, 99 spec body kit, and way down the road a street or race port, and fuel system...

not bad mods...i hope your pockets run deep

i know the numbers on the car, but from experience how do you guys feel this rwd monster handles? From what i understand rotaries are a bit more temperamental than the four bangers im used to. On a street ported motor with the 3m seals how long do you think it will last with slightly aggressive driving at say 14-15 pounds? Rebuild every 6 months? year? 2 years? Just trying to get some experienced opinions.

Im just trying to extend my collection, i love boosted awd, i love boosted fwd, and now a boosted rotary rwd is gonna be a whole new project and experience that i would like to get into but i want some opinions on some good starter mods and what to look for when buying one.

Those 2 sites were pretty good.. I did read the faq.. Good stuff

any more opinions are appreciated

thanks

You must have a ghetto FD because mine has been pretty good to me every day of the year. With that said, my car is on its second engine. The previous owner replaced it because it overheated due to a broken AST tank. I replaced it recently after it chipped an apex seal close to 100k miles while doing a high speed run with a Ferrari

I daily drive my car and aside from regular maintenance and normal tear and wear items, its been good (if you dont count replacing the engine at 100k ). Unfortunately these engines dont last a long time like piston engines do but you wont be replacing them very often if you treat them right. Theres a few threads going on here about daily driving the FD. Theres many replies to them with good info on people's cars and their mods.

It definately seems like im gonna have to baby the car compared to my evo and crx, but the rex had 4 different motors, so im sure by 100k ill replace it anyway...or rebuild it.

thanks for the tips, ive read alot of the faq thread and learned tons about the car and im sure i still have tons to go.. When going to look at the car is there anything i should pay close attention to? I can tell if a b16 or gsr has something wrong with it but im blind to rotaries. Ive read that the vacuum lines dry out from the precat and it could melt the battery, so theres two things i know to look for. What else?

honestly there wont be a strait answer to this question. rebuilds can happen at anytime when you stop upping the horsepower. All you can do is lessen your chances of detonating the engine but that wont garauntee anything. I would say most of us rx7 owners know that our engines can go at anytime, and its just what we have to live owning the FD theres no getting around it. Your best bet to keep you engine lasting as long as possible is to research research research and just hope that the people on this forum know what there talking about and many of them do but some of them dont. Honestly I would suggest anyone by this car unless they either have to much money or they love the RX7 enough to deal with all the pain the car can cause you. I know my car has cause me alot of pain but I love it so much that its worth it to me but my friends and family think Im an idiot.

sorry..I'm picky.

Also, those numbers may not sound impressive, but coupled with the fact that these cars weigh as little as 2780lbs stock(can be more depending on options), they are deceptively quick.

I daily drive my FD and never had much problems other than normal wear and tear items. That being said the owner before me beat the holy living **** out of the car (single turbo, dp, midpipe, AND STOCK ECU) and I had to replace the engine at 75k along with a fuel system upgrade and PFC. Price you pay for getting a "good deal"

Besides the obvious research that you need to do (for instance, if you "plan on a rx7 store gt35r", you're going to need the "fuel system" along with it, along with a lot more), don't be in such a hurry to start modding the hell out of the car. If you do decide that you really want to tackle an FD, find a decent one that is near stock, and drive it for a while in that state so that you understand how the car is, especially in a mechanical sense. Too many people just start throwing a ton of mods at the car, then encounter a host of problems with no beginning or end in sight because they didn't understand how each mod affects the FD.

I strongly suggest that you do a ton of reading up first before jumping headfirst into the deep end of a very deceptive pool...

I am sticking with my honda, the turbos going out and a k20s going in.. But id like to start another project. And ive always wanted an rx7 so i feel its time for one now..

I dont plan on modding it at all for a long time, that list of mods was just plans for the future, the far future. I cant afford to mod it immediately, i have two other projects that take up most of my time and money. Im in no rush to buy one either. I am looking for one, but im not rushing it at all. Im trying to get as much information as possible BEFORE i buy it, so it could be 3 months, 6 months, or even a year before i get one. Just trying to add some variety to my fleet. And again, im in no rush. Im probably gonna have it for a few months, get a new radiator, some decent suspension, and exhaust and leave it at that for a long time, or at least till i know the car a little better.

thanks for the advice
