New to Rotary: 94' RX-7

hello all...i recently signed up, but i've been reading a lot to start with. so i bought my rx7 on ebay (probably not the brightest idea) which is a 1994 Silver RX-7...the guy who had it was the 2nd owner, and he did some mods he called 'reliability mods' which from what i've been reading agree. the car has the following, HKS carbon fiber exhaust, hi flow cat, ss downpipe, aftermarket aluminum radiator, greddy type-s bov, turbo timer, profec-b boost controller, aem dual intake, ast overflow tank and original 45k miles. so the question is, what should i get checked/serviced for before really driving it. (previous owner has had oil and regular routine checks) please let me know what i should get done...thanks a lot in advance

Check that out. Looks like your missing an ECU upgrade.

Off-Topic: Are you still part of CPC?

WPC. Someone pointed you out at the One6 Meet, but I don't think we ever actually met.

Welcome, 94 silver is fairly rare. I agree, with a programable ecu you would have a truly fast car. Not that it's not fast now.

The mods he did are somewhat past reliablilty mods. Intake, high-flow cat and cat-back are considered performace mods. The other mods were very good especially when you consider the performance mods. Almost seems like you would have to have an ecu upgrade. I would double check that.

Also consider boost and water temp gauge. I would also do a 30k service for peace of mind. Fuel filter also if its not been done recently. Then just drive the **** out of it.

thanks a lot for the info. i was gonna have a local rotary specialist shop perform a service tune up...also are there certain types of ecu's that anyone would recommend in upgrading? I'm just sort of scurred of the car blowing up on me...when i mentioned i was reading a lot earlier, i meant reading horror stories of apex seals blowing and engine's blowing due to heating problems...blah blah blah...so i just want it to make it heh...also what else should i get besides the service and the ecu upgrade for reliability? sorry im just trying to get as much info as possible at this point. the car is being delivered to me as we speak, and itll get here by next saturday...thanks!

You should definatly look into an ECU upgrade, but before you decide on something, decide on what level you wish to take the car to. By that I mean, are you planing on a street port in the future? Going over 15psi? upgrading to a larger single turbo?

The answers to those questions will tell you wich path to take.

If you plan to heavily modify the car (i.e. street port, upgraded turbo) you may as well save yourself some time and money and purchase a stand-alone such as the Apex power fc. More info on the various stand-alones can be found in the ECU forum. note: being a noob, it's in your best interest that you have your car tuned PROFESSIONALLY when going standalone. Not just someone with tuning experience, but someone who is familiar with a rotary and how they should be tuned.

If you just want a quick fix, an M2 or pettit ECU will be much cheaper and will get the job done, making it safe for you to run 15psi.

Get a boost gauge, it is VERY important that you watch this and do not let your boost levels exceed the stock 10psi which I have a feeling it will with the upgraded exhaust and what not. DO NOT drive it hard until you have an ECU upgrade, end of story. What will happen is you will have too much boost which the ECU can not compensate fuel for causing a lean condition which results in detonation. Detonation is what kills apex seals, and apex seals means it's time for a rebuild which is pricey.

It's important that you know that if you plan to keep this car for any long period of time you will be replacing a motor. It's a fact of life and part of owning these cars. Fortunatly, there are many many great shops with knowledgeable people on board who can help you.

It wouldn't be a bad idea upon delivery to take your car to A-spec (I see you're from chi-town). They're knowledgable guys and big on rx-7s. They can definatly help you out with whatever you need and tell you what's best for your wants.

Most importantly, read, read, read. Gain as much knowledge about these cars as you can. You'll need every bit of it. Have fun and enjoy it.

oh, and welcome to the forum

i think the best mod you can do to that RX7 is getting a daily driver if you don't have one already. then get a Pettit ECU and run race gas when you turn the boost up to 14 psi.

thanks for all the info, i've been trying to read as much as possible, and i will be taking my car into a-spec as soon as i recieve the car. also, i just want the car to live as long as possible before the motor goes, so i won't be modding it heavily (ie. turbo upgrade, street port). i'll be going with ecu upgrade and getting boost guage is my frist step.
