New Pettit Streetport Motor Smokes Like Crazy

Ive recently purchased a new streetport motor from pettit racing im still using stock turbos that have 120,000 miles on them. Smokes like crazy when i first start it up and even after warm up still smokes just not as bad. Could it be my turbos or could it be motor any way to tell?

I say turbos.. If they have that many miles. Did it smoke before with those turbos on??

Otherwise, They might of put the oil control ring wrong or they didn't spec it before they put the engine together.

Here are the steps to check it.

1. take your plugs out and see if you see any oil residue.
2. Take your turbos off and look to see if oil is present in your manifold.
3. Crank the car without the turbos and see if it smokes after couple of minutes.

If all three test show oil, its your engine is bad.

Come on now, you honestly think that your turbos are still good after 120k miles? They do give out over time man. I would put money on it.

The engine is fine. Kandy @ Pettit does a fantastic job with 'em. I have had 2 engines from her and they have been perfect. Swap out them turbos and give it another shot.

Good luck!

You should be calling Pettit before posting a thread about it, IMO. But I second or third it that it may very likely be your turbos. Most are fried well before 120k miles.

I agree. Thats kinda harsh for pettit. People might get a bad taste in their mouth now from this thread. Its most likely not their engine too thats causing the problem.

since you obviously don't know what the problem is don't you think a better title to your post would have been "new streetport motor smokes on startup"??????????????

Pettit is one of the finest engine builders and does not deserve to have their reputation tarnished by a thoughtless remark on your part.

either your turbo bearings are trash of something got screwed up on the re-install.

it is highly improbable that you have anything but a first class engine that will last for years if properly maintained.

next time think before you type.

Yes, I had a car with mazda reman with bad control ring (engine had less than 5k). I didn't get a compression test but it had good compression far as I could see and hear... hehe..

This thread is about theseven experiencing smoking with his "new" setup. This is not a Pettit experience thread, those are in the Vendor section. Any further comments regarding Pettit not directly related to engine building will be deleted.

but this statement is 100% fine to make and won't get deleted, in a thread about smoking issue with his "new set-up"

my picture was pretty thoughtless too...on their part

just like I stated in another thread that a mod was arguing in...I just want to inform the "community" what is out there. I could care one way or another, but if the mods want to delete "real world" experiences from forum members, have at it.

I guess if you don't want your post to be deleted, you need to donate some money to the forum..

Howard's post has comments in it that are relevant to this thread. Your picture post didn't. There is a sub-forum for threads regarding customer service with vendors, and this thread isn't it.

I have no experience with Pettit and there is no hidden agenda in my actions here. Just trying to keep the thread clean and on topic. Please use the Suggestions forum or PM me for any further discussion on the topic. Thanks -Tyler.

My apologies, I thought a good number of credited forum members were pointing at his twins.

Make No Mistake About I Think That Pettit Builds Excellent Motors And I Would Highly Recommend Them To Anybody. My Concern Is Not With The Motor Pettit Built But The Tuners Who Tuned My Car And If They Tuned It Right. Also The Turbos With 120,000 Miles On Them Anybody Know How To Check The Turbos In Any Way To See If There Good Or Going Bad Is It Normal To Have Alot Of Smoke With No Emissions And Straight Exhaust......

Pull the intake piping off. Take 2 fingers, firmly grasp the nut on the compressor wheel. Proceed to wiggle wheel side to side and front to back. If the shaft moves more then stated in the factory service manual, replace turbos . This should not move at ALL. 120k I would assume their shot.
