New Passenger Hand Grip Repair

Like so many of us, I have suffered the misfortune of having a cracked passenger hand grip. I took my door apart tonight, planning to fix the grip using the directions found on www.robrobinette.com However, I had no J-B Weld handy, as his directions say to use.

So I came up with my own method. The inside of the grip handle is plastic, and the piece that it secures to is also plastic. So I got out the old soldering iron, and began melting the two together, from the inside.

I decided I needed more plastic than was available on the grip itself, so I took the top off of an old VHS tape that I didn't care about, and snapped off the end that acts as a hinge. I melted this and used it to fuse the grip to the rest of the door plastic.

I must say that I'm very please with the results. It was easy to do, required nothing but a video tape and a soldering iron, and took about 20 minutes (not counting taking off the door panel and putting it back on. The handle is now secure, since it has essentially become part of the rest of the door plastic.

I melted plastic all around the inside of the grip, and waited for that to set, then went at it again. Here are the results, let me know what you think.

Those pics are kinda blurry, but you get the idea. Best of all, it's all hidden from view, so no matter how much reinforcing plastic you use, no one sees it.
