New Owner of a Vintage Red 1993 Touring

1993 Vintage Red Touring
83,000 miles
8,300 dollars

THE GOOD:
The price
When you turn the key it starts - hahaha

THE BAD:
Leaky Twin Turbos
16x7.5 ICW Racing Tsunami - AKA Ricer wheels
MaXSpeed (Made in China) Coilovers YT-MD07
No Thread Left on Rear Tires
2 keys for 3 locks- Only the key lock on the driver's side and the igniton work
Missing plastric trim on driver's side
Non Working Bose rear speakers
Fifth Gear syncro going going gone...
Non working fog lights - Or I dont know how to make them work
Air Bag Light ALWAYS ON
Glove Box is 1/4 open letting light out when the inside light is on
Horrible Smell of gas/ running rich... It looks like the oem exhaust is going bye bye or could be from the manifold/downpipe. I saw that the heatshields on the exhaust were torn up pretty bad. It seems to be coming from the passengers side more.
Broken Antenna for the radio
Only the CD player works - Anyone rebuilds OEM BOSE systems?

If anyone can help me with solving some of the issues above I will appreciate it. I am on the works of getting in contact with mazdaspeed motorsports for a discount on OEM parts but does anyone know a really cheap website for OEM parts mostly for a tune up. P.S. Is the OEM oxygen sensor from Denso?

Welcome!!

For OEM parts there is only one source I and most all other FD owners buy from.....
Malloy Mazda. Ask for Ray Crowe.... 703-494-9121

THE BAD:
Leaky Twin Turbos......Find a good used set in the marketplace, upgrade to BNR's, or go single
16x7.5 ICW Racing Tsunami - AKA Ricer wheels......Yes, these are terrible. There is an awesome FD wheel fitment thread in the Suspension section.
MaXSpeed (Made in China) Coilovers YT-MD07
No Thread Left on Rear Tires.... No problem... 7.5's are pizza cutters anyway. Bye bye.
2 keys for 3 locks- Only the key lock on the driver's side and the igniton work....Yep, call Ray
Missing plastric trim on driver's side....Ray or parts section
Non Working Bose rear speakers....Most people completely remove the horrible Bose setup. 4 quality speakers and a decent receiver will sound great. If you are partial to base a single 8 or 10" will easily get ya there.
Fifth Gear syncro going going gone... JDM or good used trannies are plentiful. Japan2LA sells TONS of JDM parts. You can PM him. Also check the marketplace or post a WTB.
Non working fog lights - Or I dont know how to make them work....Check the bulb, fuse, circuit for power. That is if you actually want to keep them...
Air Bag Light ALWAYS ON.... Easy fix, Efini wheel and pull the bulb . You will need to search on this one. Covered with tons of info on fixes.
Glove Box is 1/4 open letting light out when the inside light is on.... Ray or marketplace
Horrible Smell of gas/ running rich... It looks like the oem exhaust is going bye bye or could be from the manifold/downpipe. I saw that the heatshields on the exhaust were torn up pretty bad. It seems to be coming from the passengers side more.......This is VERY BAD. Check for fuel leaks. The pulsation dampener on the primary rail is very prone to leaking. Check for codes to ensure no sensors are bad. Get that OEM downpipe out of there. DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR until you find the source of the fuel fumes.
Broken Antenna for the radio...... Welcome to the club. I removed mine.
Only the CD player works - Anyone rebuilds OEM BOSE systems?..... They are garbage. Replace with a quality aftermarket. Great time to install that double DIN navigation.

Visit the FAQ thread and get started on performing all those reliability mods. Understand that it is going to take some time to make your car reliable and safe to drive hard. With the stock ECU you are limited to how much you can open the exhaust and intake. Read read read on modifying your car. Take things slow and learn.

1. CHANGE THE FUEL FILTER! - This is very important. Change it every 10k

2. Gauges - You need an aftermarket boost gauge and water temp gauge at a minimum. Knowing what boost you are running is very important. The OEM water temp gauge is very inaccurate. If it is slightly over half, the car is overheating. Having a Power FC can easily allow you to monitor more accurately.....

3. I definitely recommend a Power FC as one of your first mods. The ability to monitor all sensors and see their voltages, tune for more boost, change when your fans switch on, are just a few advantages. It is an awesome tool.

4. Upgrade your OEM fuel pump and rewire it. There are many inexpensive options out there that will keep the fuel flowing. The OEM wiring is old and the pump demands good wiring. Search, and you will see some nice write-ups on giving your pump more juice.

5. One of the most important pieces of advice I could give you. BUY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. Carry it in your car. Please.
