New owner overheating please help
Um I recently bought my 94 FD from a person I knew. The car was running great until about a week ago I notice white smoke pouring out of my hood. The small hose on the AST had been blown off and it was blasting steam everywhere. I checked the FC comm. and it said the water temp was at 130 C! I let it sit and added a bit more water and coolant but didnt help too much. I left it for the night and come back for it after it had cooled. After I finally got time to work on it today I removed the thermostat to see if it would help with coolant flow. I need to get an OEM thermo though so waiting on that but now when I run the car it seems like the fans dont turn on. I'm doing the best I can but I need help. Any input from anyone would be great. Also I should be running 70/30 coolant mix? How can I do this? And is there anyother reason it would overheat and any suggested solutions?<----- so many questions NEED HELP!

First off which hose blew off the AST the one to the thermostat filler neck, the bottom one, or the one to the recovery tank ? ? When you refill the system you need to burp as much air out of the system as possible at the throttle body coolant hose and more than likely you'll need to replace a cap or put a better hose clamp on the hose that blew off. Do you know what pressure cap your running ? (search)

130C? that's 266F. Search for how to do the champaign test. If you have bubbles in your filler neck, go to Autozone, Murray's, Pep Boys, or whatever place you have around you that loans tools. See if they have a coolant system pressure tester. Test your cooling system. At 266F, more than likely you warped your housings, burnt your coolant seals, and need a new motor. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Well pressure caps are stock. The hose that blew off was to recovery tank (Small hose). Seems to be no bubbles. The engine is relatively new and I never let it stay at 130C that would be madness. With the expense of burning myself I filled with water and coolant immediatly. I now removed the thermostat, drained and filled with new coolant, and replaced fan fuse(which happened to be blown . I have test drove the car and it seems to be all better. But tell me I should use a 70/30 mix of coolant correct? How do I know if I have this mix right or is it a guestimate. Where can I find Water Wetter? How do I burp the system?(Where is the TB coolant hose? The location of things are confusing me sooooo much

another suggestion:
never add coolant to a smokin' hot engine, you will do more damage than good. allow it to cool on it's own before trying to add anything to the system, about the most you should do is just open the system to air and allow it to cool.
as for the fans, check to be sure the wiring to the switch on the back of the water pump housing is still in place.

When they say 70/30 that's the ratio of WATER to Coolant, not coolant to water, water being the higher percentage. Your hose to the recovery tank shouldn't blow off....there's not supposed to be any pressure there just movement of coolant for when it's ho to when it cools off is there blockage in the hose or did the hose just become loose from getting hot and slipped off, if it's not tight enough to stay on put a clamp on it or it will allow it to draw air when it cools and not the coolant.

That hose will pop off if the coolant is boiling as it leaves the pressure cap! I hope your motor is ok.
So it sounds like the fans stop running and the coolant temp went vertical, better find out why that fuse blew or it might repeat.
To fill the system I go thru a process of venting the block coolant nipples and squeezing the main coolant hoses until I get out all the air in the system, it won't be complete this way but it does work well. If you cannot figure out the nipple location or how to vent them don't worry about it, the following will work anyway.
Then to finish, keep the cap on the water pump housing off, then start the car and let the engine warm up. Rev the motor a bit after a few minutes to speed up the warm up and once the thermostat opens keep the revs up around 2-3k rpm and keep adding coolant mix or just water until the coolant level stops going down. Replace the cap and make sure your coolant overflow level is set right, keep checking this occasionally over the next few days.
Then check coolant level after the next two or three times that you drive the car (after it cools down of course) and add water as needed to fill, when you open it the second or third day it should be full.
