New & old J&S Knock Sensor

Is the purple box the newer or the older model compared to the black box J&S? Or are they different animals altogether? Anyone have a wiring diagram for the J&S purple box? Thanks.

I think they have been purple for a while now. The Mazdaspeed catalog I have from several (5+) years ago shows a black plastic(?) box, but I have had an anodized purple box in my car for years (4+). I am pretty sure there are newer versions than the one I have, but I thought they still came in purple boxes.

Thanks Max, would you also happen to have a wiring diagram?

From what I remember, J&S has really good tech support - give them a call and see if they'll fax you a copy of the manual.

I do for the first series of purple box ones. Is that what you need? I have presented it in rock opera below:

Cut the light green wire near the ignitor! It is Pin F, have you heard?
Connect the light green wire from the ECU (harness) to the green wire on the J&S unit. Connect the light green wire on the ignitor to the white wire of the J&S.
Splice (tap) the wire that is +12V (pin D) to the ignitor and connect the Red wire from the J&S. Damn! There is no color specified for the Mazda wire!
Black wire from the J&S to ground. You might be done now.
Optionally, you can connect the Yellow wire from the J&S to one of the MAP or TPS wires.

The rough black plastic one is definitely the old one. I installed one in my dad's car years and years ago.

Thanks Max. To make things worse, I have a post 96 engine and harness which might have a different color coding scheme for the wires but from your description, I get the gist of what signals the box is trying to intercept. Will do, thanks again.
