Exclamation New member needing advice

Hi,

Iv currently got a Lotus Elise (which I am selling), and am looking at Supra's and RX7's.

I really want something that isn't going to cause my bank heart attacks, not so much in petrol, but on going wrong.

Iv been looking into these for a while now and totally love them, lightweight, no frills is 100% what I want!! BUT I hear too many varied stories on them to make a proper decision so have come on here.

They seem to be either spot on or horrendous, cant find a happy medium. Changing oil every 2.5k n that doesn't bother me because that’s only £25 a go, but am trying to work out whether im going to be in the garage non stop with bearings, bushes, engine trouble n loads of hours labour every month spending up to 2k a year just keeping it alive and praying nothing major goes wrong whilst doing it.

I should probably mention I use my car every day, bout 15 miles round trip a day up n down A19 to girlfriends house.

Anyway iv seen this one which iv fallen for but am also looking at a supra N.A. Just don’t know what to do!!

Any thoughts are appreciated??

Cheers, Jonny!!

Both the Supra and the RX-7 are old cars. Both require a lot of regular maintnence, the 7 more so than the Supra. It's not uncommon to see long term owners of either car having spent over $100,000 not including gas or the cost of the car. Nevermind the fact that they get somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15mpg.

If you stick around long enough, you'll see the people who aren't having a ton of issues are the people who pony up the bucks to do the preventative maintnence or are people who don't drive the car enough to honestly call themselves owners.

Let me just tell you how much I would avoid 1: JDM imports and 2: a car with a widebody kit on it. Both are signs that the car has been beat to hell and is literally worth more in scrap metal than it would be to sell in Japan. Ask Circuit Theory on this forum.

If you're looking for something easier on your bank account than the Elise, you might want to go for something newer and with a better track record than the old JDM supercars. Such as a Mazdaspeed Miata or S2000. Both are affordable, good on gas(compaired to the FD or MKIV), and plenty of fun to drive.

you said gas is a concern so look at the supra, but either way you go you will be broke.

Either one is good but my advise to you is get a beater and use that to commute other wise you'll see money fall out of your pockets.

20MPG is pretty high for the RX-7. Did you read my post?

Most people are around 12-15 mpg. There are a few higher and then there are some who I don't think know how to properly calculate it. You can count on 15 mpg being the high side. IMO, if you are looking for something to help save your bank account from an Elise; this is NOT that car.
