Hey there guys,

New FD member here from Vancouver, BC. Traded my 1991 BMW 850i for this 1993 LHD USDM RX-7 5spd. I just replaced the motor with a second hand 13b with 75kms on it. Was driving home today from work going about 60kmh, while shifting from second to third the car started to stall out, jumping idle, the car felt like it was stalling out at idle while it was still going about 50/60 km/h down the road, 5 seconds later the engine died while still crusing at 50km/h. Approached the red light and tried to start the car up again but no luck, gave it some gas but it still did not want to start at all, it was still cranking over fine.

After trying to start it about 4 or 5 times i decided to call the tow truck. After 10 minutes or I decided to crank it over once again and it fired up with no issues. Drove the remaining 2 or 3 minutes to home with no problems, shifting is fine.

Any ideas? I've never had an issue like this before and I'm a little nervous about going out for another drive until my mechanic has a look at it.

Does this sound like a familiar issue?

Any help/advice appreciated!

And dont worry that body kit will be on its way real soon (as are the wheels)

Any engine codes? Is this on the stock ECU?

Have you had this engine compression tested recently?

Did you check the tps? I had similar problems and it turned out to be the tps being out of config. Also might be a bad fuel map? Also had stalling problems, added more fuel to the map and changed my FC settings and solved the stumble and idle issues.

Where would the tps be located? I'll have a look

Welcome...you've got a LOT of reading to do. Go into the FAQs if you haven't and look for the TPS. Also download a FSM and Parts Manual (free) online. These will help a ton!

Thanks, I'll be spending some time reading through threads and start learning more about the mechanics of these cars, Because I know that it will give me issues at times..

Was driving it last night, it started to stall out while at speed again, idle was getting low. When I parked it and left her at idle she started running rough, idle going up and down from 100 to about 900 rpms.

Managed to drive it to my mechanics shop 3 blocks down the road with no problems, hopefully he can find out whats going on.

Well it turned out to be a faulty positive battery cable causing my idle and performance issues.

Idle drops every now and again while crusing in neutral, mechanic says i need a tune to eliminate that.

All is well so far other than that

I second that. Positive battyer terminal/cable causing a hunting idle? THAT'S a first, at least in my dictionary. LOL (for newer BMW/MERCEDES/High end cars it 'CAN', but for our FD" good luck with that.)

I say, look for a FD specialist. This shop doesnt work on FDs.

I've heard those guys are very shady, great with tuning but I've heard to stay away from them when it comes to engine rebuilds. Can anyone confirm this?

I take my FD to Alan at Evolution Auto on Carnarvon Street in Downtown New Westminster. He's got a MKIV 800hp Supra and just sold his FD. He's a good guy and did a great job on my engine swap. He has fixed every bug it had going in and he gives me great deals, I will be sticking with him however I will definatley be taking the car to Staff's Auto or potentially ForceFed as my car has gotten work done there in its past.

Anyways, I've got a new issue. The idle usually has been at 1000 rpm on cold start and when hot. Now the idle has dropped to like > 500rpms while in neutral or cruising in neutral. Feels very very weak and the car shakes a little bit as the idle is so low. The car still runs and drives but the idle is super low, I have to be very careful when I drive it not to stall it out..

Been reading through the threads trying to gather as much common info as I can, looks like from what I have read it could obviously be a number of things...

I'm guessing a bad Fuel filter or MAP? TPS? Something ain't right here, I know it has to be a sensor or something minor, I've had this issue last week but it sort of just went away and returned this afternoon on my way to work. Alan (my Mechanic) said it could be that my car just needs a proper tune, however we are both not certain that's the case.

Anyways, I'm a new member here and will be posting new threads (Or a Build thread) when I get the time to do some mechanical work or modifications myself. For now, I just want to get all of the known issues dealt with and make her reliable as possible.

Any feedback welcome!

TPS adjustment is worth doing as a matter of general practice. Fuel filter replacement is definitely worth doing also. But I'm not sure if that's the cause.

Here`s what the idle looks like when I parked the car at home after work:

It will fluctuate up and down roughly 100 or 200 rpm or so but most of the time it will be this low (Sits dead on the mark that is circled red) and when it does the car feels very weak:
