New HKS Silent Hi-Power exhaust ...track legal?

I posted it in the sticky but didn't think people noticed it.

It might be street legal. It says it's JASMA legal but i'm not sure if that is 95db or not. The pipe is 3" but the tip is 4.72" and in CA there's a 4" max tip limit. Go to Takakaira and click on the Performance category then choose HKS. It has a cool sound clip to.

Since when did CA have a 4" tip limit? I am almost certain that the only rules regarding anything behind the cat is noise, I didn't think there was anything in the V.C. about size.

^ Was told by a cop that 5" tips are illegal and 4" is the max. My Pettit exhaust has a 5" tip. I can't verify it on DMV's website and I don't have the V.C. book, so if anyone can verify or disprove this that would be

The only real law is that your exhaust can't be over 95 dBA at 3000-5000 rpm at a distance of 20 inches from the exhaust outlet. There is nothing in the law that states you even have to have a muffler on your car -- in fact the new Neon SRT-4 doesn't have one from the factory.

The cop who told you that is the typical jerk-off.

Yah I would not believe everything a cop told me rearding what is legal and what isn't. I think the CHP guys would know more then the city cops or sherriffs.

EDIT: also somewhere in the link tells you how to test your cars decibel level. Or maybe it was on the California ARB or BAR site? (cant remember). From what I've read, the decibel meter has to be 50ft behind your cars center-line.

27150 is the code that deals with exhausts 27200 is the noise limits. If you ever get ticketed you'd see these numbers on the citation.

DOUBLE EDIT: the testing procedures were on that site. It says "new vehicles" though, but I'm assuming it also applies to used vehicles. I had to get my exhaust for my old Civic Si written off, and I went to the muffler shop that did the install. They bought a decibel meter from the local radio shack and we tested the exhaust. From a distance of 50 feet, the exhaust did not get louder then 86 db.

Even at redline (8200 RPM) the decibel meter didnt go over 86, but I dont think I even needed to go that high. I had the muffler shop guy write on one of their stationaries (with shop addy) what the decibels were at idle, 3000, and redline.

Here is the catch with the DB levels:

Somehow in CA, u have less rights in traffic violations then a criminal.

Why? Driving is NOT a right.

I got a ticket for a Racing Beat Dual Tip a coouple years ago.

I told them that it met the DB levels.

Guess what? The ******* judge asked me to provide proof. Whatever happened to them proving that the CB was too loud?

God, I hate the government in this state. If I didn't have such limited employment opportunities with my job, I would be out of here.

The thing that pisses me off the most about the exhaust noise issue is that they can give you a ticket for running an exhaust quieter than any 60s musclecar and MUCH, MUCH quieter than a #$@ Harley.

new jasma regs - legal muffler has to be 92db (ruling is different for older/newer cars though - not 100% where the old 7s fall)

kakimotos new r34 GTR exhaust is a good example of what's happening at the moment - they have released a legal 92db and a 'street/strip' 96db edition

latest editions of japanese magazines such as RE, and Rx7 magazine have recently had a lot of sound tests - covering quite a few mufflers.
