New to FDs with problems

Soon we are going to have a change this forum to club7pistons.com. I hate hearing this ****. Had to vent, every other thread is "I blew my engine, LS-1 time". It just doesn't seem "cool" to me. I have to give a little bit of gas and put it in neutral (sorry to say its an auto) to keep it running. When I accelerate it will miss occassionally also. Once I'm up and running at 40+ it seems to run fine. I've read numerous post on the FPD, O2 sensors, etc. and really can't determine where to start. Just looking for advice. Thanks
Car specs:
'93 Touring with 79k miles, no rebuild or overhaul known. Auto w/Hold.
Interior is near mint, exterior needs work.

I bought one doing the same thing. I would venture to say that it had never had the fuel filter changed. When I finally got it out from over the diff, it was almost completely plugged. Swapped in a new one and the car straightened out. On this site, every first response is a blown motor, and rightly so, there are a lot of horror stories. But don't be alarmed. There are alot of needless engine swaps too, especially from dealers and unknowledgeable shade tree mechanics. (I value the stealerships very little)
With a ECM controlled car, you can't account for all the extreme circumstances that can occur. The tell tale sign was a lot of black smoke on acceleration. My car ran very very rich. I felt ok about that because it wasn't likely to knock. The very low fuel pressure at the rail probably caused a weird state in the ECM. I have seen a pinched vacumm line do the same thing. Result = bad idle, rich smell, oxy sensor codes etc... Do the easy cheap stuff first. Don't neglect the filters and fluids, ever!
Fix all noticeable leaks. Then you can think a little more clearly to problem solve. Otherwise, you'll go in circles.

Comet, its cool. I know I was getting a little upset at all these engine swap stories. I probably sounded like an adolescent, it just really disturbs me I guess. Oh well. to each his own.
Watch out my man, 23 is young but it goes fast, also I get to enjoy life a little better now than I did at 23. I am still younger than half of the people my age anyway, looks and at heart. Have fun guys. Comet your alright with me.

They wind up in salvage yards wrecked, or in back yards to rust away do to lack of funds to repair. If it's not BS and this actually bought a 93 CYM R-1 then it's a shame to see it hacked. I would be nice if these engines weren't so expensive to rebiuld, look at the price to rebuild a 350 small block chevy compaired to just a gasket kit for our cars....it's rediculous.

Unique is a big part of its appeal. It is the most fun car I have ever been in, and is years ahead of its time. I know I sound like ******* prophet or something but hey, this is the effect this car has had on me. That's even with all the issues that come with it. That is passion. I know you guys are the same way. RIGHT?
yep he is passionate about this car. I too had the '93 new experience. Sat in a brand new off the lot and to the stereo store '93 red touring in '93. I was just out of highschool and it was like a ******* spaceship to me. I had never seen such a nice car, one of the richest guys in town dad owned it. Only one. He had it customized with a Clarion Voice recognition stereo system. We are talking high tech at the time. I was blown away, I too thought I would never own one. That's what dreams are all about, fullfilling the dream. CantGoStraight has opened my eye, I am getting on this guy and people have done a lot worse, your right. Its just that it hurts bad at this phase of the game. They will be extinct in 5 years the way we are going. I just don't want it to happen.
Hinson hasn't quoted me yet but my friend's FC swap ran ~9700. I've talked to th e guy that does the swaps and he said they usually run 8K+ depending on what upgrades, instumentation, etc. you want. That FC is probably the fastest and quickest car I've ever been in and it still handles curves. About the keeping the rotary, you're right about basically ripping the soul from the car, and I wouldn't at all mind keeping it. I just don't want to have to rebuild a motor every 60k or so. BTW what kind of hp can be reliably driven for 60k or so?

thought I would mention you Dave, didn't want to leave you out.
two of each, I got about 14 mountains a couple miles away. hey CantGoStraight, we both need to get out and drive, bro. I am stuck at work and you sound just as busy as me. At least we can enjoy a laugh.

I was actually just out in the car (about a half hour ago) car runs good in the evening ! ! !
Working on gettin my bling bling ready to go in the engine bay. This front off the east coast that threatens to be a hurricane is cooling things off so I hope to get some work done tomorrow. What hours you work ? ? ? ? Do you rotate shifts ? ? ?

I own a tanning salon here in ft collins. We are open 10 - 7 every day except Sunday. My schedule is pretty flexible. I just recently got her back up and kicking. I am just finishing the interior bling. I am waiting for some stuff I ordered and then I hope to finish it up, oh and I got the springs to put on. Now I am looking at the exhaust and the brakes as next place to upgrade. oh and a Power FC. I am taking my time and doing things right and in good taste. I will never get rid of this car, so I have some time. A true weekend driver sometimes not for many weekends. It doesn't come out when the snow or any bad weather comes, I drove it once in rain, that is it. Anyway you better be careful and watch out down there in those storms. I am sure you are used to it. Still, be careful.
10 pm to 7 am ???? as it was late when you were posting so I figured night shift job. I guess we can consider this thread hi-jacked LOL Perhaps we can start a save the 7 club across the country for all he thrid gens.
Ps. in reference to this thread (so it's not a total jacking) the only problem with this new FD is it's owner.

While I sort of sigh whenever someone talks about the v8 swap, I understand. Less engine bay heat, more power/torque, less complexity, excellent fitment, etc. The good news is that you can swap a rotary back in later. But to buy your first RX-7 and never learn an appreciation for the rotary is sort of sad. But it's not my choice. It's not yours either.
Dave
Not a choice, just an opinion. Like most opinions it really doesn't matter what mine is but most all of us voice it at one time or another. It's more the Ford thing that gets me than the V-8 thing. We all make mistakes and most of us would like to see this one avoided.
