"New" fan mod..reinventing the wheel?

Hello,

Ive been researching the fan mods eople have been doing. The switch, whioch turns the fans on med, or automatically turnes the fans up one speed in reguards to what the ECU wants, etc etc. One of them said if you forget to unground the switch, the fans will stay on until the battery runs out. I didnt like this at all. Mostly cuz im very forgetful, and I would probably be doing that alot. So, I dug into the FSM, and heres what I did. I disconnected the 4 fan relays. I have a dedicated relay running my Defi gauges, so I tapped off that, and ran two wires to the + pin on the two fans' connectors. Then, I grounded the 4 pins total (2 on each fan connector) and, there you go. Full time high speed fan operation that is turned on by the ignition. My temps with the AC on before would reach 100C sitting in traffic, but now they havent gotten over 90C. sitting with no AC on, it sits just above 84C. I dont know if this has been done before, but it works for me. I dont worry about overheating, flipping switches, or draining my battery. feel free to email me if anyone wants to know how to do it...

Sounds overkill, your putting a lot of strain on many components all the time. Just my thoughts

I have a two way switch, one way: fans on medium only when the car is on, the other the fans are on low and can be turned on with the car on or off(great for at the track when I am trying to cool the engine down without having the car on)

I can leave the switch on medium all the time and my fans will only run when the car is on.

Yes, I did think of that, but I figured its the same as people who run their fuel pumps at 12V constant all the time. Besides, this mod doesnt use any existing wiring. It took me about 30 mins to rig it up, mostly because it took time to attach all of the connectors. At the worst, I will only maybe burn the fans out sooner, but the way I look at it is, i'd rather burn up a set of fans, than a motor. Besides, a perma cool 16inch elec fan that pulls 2950 Cfms is only about $80 from jegs. I use that fan with my koyo rad on my FC, it runs full 12V all the time and I cant get the temp over 90C..I just wanted to share my idea, becuase the list has given me so much info, I just wanted to give a little back..

take it easy!

I have the fan mod from Steve Cirians web site. I like to be able to turn the fans on and off when I decide. I would never use them when the car is cold, or during freeway driving......they are not needed.

However, I do appreciate it when someone tries something new, and shares it with the group. There may be others who will like your modification. It's just not for me.

i think it is a pretty decent mod, i have my power fc set for the fans to come on med speed at 185F and come on high at 195F. i havent seen anything higher than 195F since the mod, and it rarelly goes higher than 185F.

yea, thats all good. I know alot of people use the thermoswitch from miatas, but I didnt want to spend that much time to find one and put it in. I guess there is alot of hot air blowing on the I/C all the time, but, I doubt its worse than the I/C sitting in the hot *** engine bay..I dunno...Oner thing I do know, this is better than having the car heat up to 105C and then having the fans turn on. I was tired of having to run the AC all the time to try and cool the car down.

Hey! What if you could come up with a fan mod that:

1. Took 30 minutes to install.
2. Required splicing two wires that are easy to access.
3. Turned your fans on and off automatically at a lower
than stock preset temperature on either low or
high depending on the demand.
4. Preserved the life of the fans by not running them
when not needed.
5. Did not require installing any extra switches.
6. Did not rice up your interior with extra switches
7. You could order from Malloy Mazda tomorrow by an
800 number or by E-mail with FREE shipping, and
was Mazda OEM.
8. And cost $35.00?

Would that interest you?

Yes, I understand that the miata thermoswitch works, and its easy. But, dont you have to remove the air pump to install it? Why let the fans stay off until they need to work harder to cool the engine off? id rather it just not get that hot to begin with. Heat robs horsepower and stresses components. So, why not keeo them as cool as possible? I dont care about burning out stock fans. A cheap upgrade that pulls probably double what the stock ones do is a phonecall away, I had some extra wire, and time and just rigged this up my way, with no switches, and no heavy maintenance. I like things to be simple. Im not knocking the miata way by any means, I just prefered my way, thats all...im not trying to flame anyone here....

I would not worry about burning out the stock fans, after all they are over 10 years old and are still working for damn near everyone on this forum
