new engine starting procedures?

Whenever I have a new or rebuilt piston engine, I always pull the coil wire and the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine for a few seconds to build up oil pressure before starting or follow some other similar procedure for "pre-lubing" the engine.
So I thought I'd just pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the engine over for a while, maybe until I see pressure show on the oil pressure gauge when I go to start my new engine.
Just was curious about having the spark plugs firing while doing this? Any other suggestions on how to start a new rotary?

Thanks!
