FINALLY got my AVC-R for my FD. I had one for my FC, and LOVED it. This is hands down one of the more misunderstood boost controllers for the FD, so I did a big writeup on installing and TUNING the thing in. Takes some work, but you can get a great, flat boost curve with a little effort.

Even if you don't have an AVC-R, there's a lot of good information for any boost controller install, and some good fundamentals of how boost controllers and wastegates work.

I'm using the PowerFC. While it has boost control, it's EXTREMELY basic and is still limited by the paramters of the stock boost control system - you're still screwing with pill size and the stock solenoids.

And, yes, you can get a smooth transition - just enjoyed it on the way to work this morning .

I thought you had the PFC, so why not hook the solenoid up to the PFC? Save having 2 things hanging around in the interior. Of course I say that with some pretense of being able to follow your install if it were hooked up to the PFC

Thats the best info on the AVC-R i have read yet, i have had an APEXI AVC-R for almost a year now and i have learned a lot from that FAQ, i dont have a smooth boost but i do keep my spiking under control with the AVC-R, I will be printing off your guide and going for some WOT runs with the LM-1 loggin, i think with the logs i maybe wont have to look at the AVC-R whilst driving haha, But will use the AVC to dial myself some nice boost patterns.

The PFC has VERY basic boost control - you can't do the full RPM and gear-based setups. Not to mention the AVC-R's screen is about a million times easier to read than the god-awful PFC commander screen.

Also, you have to realize I LOVE JDM electronics doo-dads. I once typed up a list of all the crap I had on my old FC back in the day - it was ridiculous.

Anyhow, of all the boost controllers I've owned (HKS EVC I, Profec E-01, and probably a few others) the AVC-R was my favorite. Love the interface and the control it gives you.

Hi Dale,

I enjoy reading your nice writeup.

I have a question , why did you cap one of the outlet nipple from the primary turbo housing going to turbo pre-control actuator?
instead of combining the 2 nipples from the housing with tees and connect them to the NO port on the solenoid like in the instruction given by the avc-r manual.

There's no need for a T - those two nipples are pulling from the same source, and a cap on that one nipple is less of a failure point and less plumbing than a tee.

Dale quick question for you, I believe the Apexi AVC-R and the GReddy E-01 use the same boost solenoid. I have the latter and am doing some programing right now and am wondering what you have your set and gain values set at, and the start boost.
I have full non-sequential set-up with ported waste gate and its boosting 9.3psi at 75 set and 70 gain. I'd like to get 12 psi.

I tried the link for clubrx but I kept getting an error message.

i have run the AVCR for a number of years and am in complete agreement w Dale. not only does it do many things other boost controllers can't do but the screen is very nice.

i especially like that the vacuum readings as they are in are in MMs of mercury. at idle i am working w a number of around 425. this gives me an easy to understand fine tuned (because it is a big number) reading of my compression at idle.

you can set boost in each gear or at a specific rpm etc. i run two Garrett TO4s and the AVCR controls both WGs and has always delivered boost dead on my setting.

as to boost spike... reset your gain lower. boost creep generally occurs when the WG is unable to vent enough to control boost. often not a BC issue but a WG issue.

while it might take a bit longer to completely understand the AVCR it will pay you back and you will be happy you made the effort.
