Need to sell my FD...But I don't wan't to...Please help with suggestions
I've had my '93 R1 for about a year and a half now as my daily driver. I need to sell it because it's sending me to the poor house. Every week there seems to be something else wrong with it, and I have no money because I keep spending whatever I have to get the car fixed. This weekend it'll be with my mechanic because of bucking during acceleration and irratic idle.
I'm crazy about this car, I've wanted an FD since I first laid my eyes on one. But when my EMT class starts in January, I want to be able to focus on school instead of what's going to happen next with my car.
If anyone has any suggestions as to why I should/shouldn't sell the car, or if anyone knows of a really cheap and reliable daily driver, please let me know.
Oh, and it has ~79,000 miles on the original engine and turbos...which is another thing that has me on edge.
Please help. I really don't want to have to sell it.

Can you afford to park the car for a while and buy a $1000 beater? Keep in mind too that you can add the beater on your ins for CHEAP and you can tell them that the FD is not bieng drivin and they can put your ins for it on hold. If you can swing that than while you are at school you can use the money you saved to fix the FD over time... and maybe add a couple mods so its ready to go when your ready! Good luck.

If you really love the car and want to keep it BUY A BEATER! It is the best mod you will ever have. Also ditch the mechanic and work on it yourself. There is plenty of support here and on other sites.

don't be keep the car it's not like you're parting with a honda here we're talking about an FD3S RX-7! buy a bucket as a daily driver and save your money. i'm in that situation right now. i'm saving money for a new engine. i do miss all the chicks looking at me though (now i know it was never me that they were looking at). i get no love in my '87 323 wagon

What do you guys suggest as a beater? Can't be any more than about $1000. Is any $1000 reliable?...God I can't wait 'till I start my career...no more struggling for me!

Keep it. And by the way, you can most likely fix the bucking for less than 10 bucks. Replace your grounds. I replaced the ground from the uim to the firewall and added one from the negative battery terminal to the chassis. Good as new. Do a search for the thread "buckin rx". It takes 10 mins to do the grounds. How is the car boosting? Have you checked the compression? Theres a lot to consider before unloading the car.

something affordable+reliable like an old honda or toyota. my '87 323 wagon's got 161k 1st engine 5spd and i still take up to 90mph on the way to work everyday... of course it looks like **** and is probably worth a few hundred dollars but who cares that's my daily driven bucket

Usually Honda's and Toyota's are pretty reliable. Other makes I am sure can be reliable too but certain makes/models reputation speak for themselves. Keep in mind that any car for a $1000.00 will be old with high miles and not perfect, but some have parts that last longer than others.
Whether you should get rid of your car or not? If you have to then it might be best to get rid of it. Nothing says you can't get another down the road, and hey maybe you can just buy one later already single turbo'd off the bat after you get a good paying job. It won't be easy giving it up, I speak from experiance, you'll regret it for a while but just keep your eye on the prize(your goals). Yes it is the famed FD3S we're talking about but there are certain things of more value than cars and certain things that take priority. I've learned that for sure.
I wish you luck in your choice whatever it is. If you get the hesitation problem fixed cheaply than you may want to just think about giving it two weeks more to see if anything more goes wrong with it. It's up to you.
Best of luck with your career too, hopefully the demand for people in the medical field stays high for a while. My g/f is waiting to get into a course at a local hospital to be a LPN..

Ya ditch the mechanic and do your own work, its really not that bad. Just get a factory service manual and youll be alright, the money you save will buy ya a POS car. Thats what i am doing.

Why don't you work a bit harder and buy a spare car, civic, collora. Don't sell the seven man! You'll be missing her like hell!
well, that's just my point of view. (I used to fell that when I had to sell my FC to keep my FD so now I have my dearest FD, and Cefiro (A31) with automatic 2JZ GTE VVTI as my spare car, and I still miss my FC)

Thanks for all the input guys. No matter how hard I try to think rationally and sell the 7 for a new Civic or something...I just can't bring myself to do it...I'M KEEPING THE 7! My girlfriend says it's a good idea because she knows how crazy I am about my car...It's my second love.
I've been checking AutoTrader.com, and there are plenty of ~$1000 cars in my area, so I'll go the beater route.
black99: I'm not really going into the medical field persay...I graduated from the FireFighter academy and I'm doing as much as I can (i.e. EMT, EVOC and Class D license) to put me ahead of other applicants so I can get hired by a department soon...hopefully.
Again, thanks everybody.
