Need prep advice for long haul trip cross country
Hi guys! Let me just say that I have found a ton of useful info on this forum so far and I will try not to be an annoying newbie...the search button is my friend.
I have just transitioned over from DSM country (I was even a mod on the DSMTalk forums) to a 3rd Gen.
I've just purchased a 94 R2, bone stock, from a guy in Georgia. The car looks in great shape and has 69,500 on the clock.
I am in the military stationed near San Fran but I have to go down to the panhandle area of the south every now and again. While on business last month, I found and bought the car. I told the seller I would be back down in 3 weeks to take the car off his hands after the paperwork was finalized.
I will be picking up the car around the 4th of Oct and the car will spend a month in Mississippi while I'm on business. After that, it's a LONG haul back to the bay area. I know the route well, having driven the trek in my 88 CRX beater car four times.
This time around I'm going to do it in the 7 and I want to take all neccessary precautions to minimize the stress on the car.
What things should I be aware of before this trip? What should I bring? I won't have time to install a temp gauge before I leave but I plan on travelling from dusk till dawn to keep temps down.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

change all fluids to new and use synthetics , high test gas only ,new plugs and new fuel, air ,oil filters, check brakes and tires. while it is in Mississippi leave it with someone to check it all over unless you do this type work. I get Garfinkle in Murfreesboro Tn to check my used cars before and after I buy them

Yeah, the stock temp gauge doesn't tell you anything until it's too late. At this time of year with cooler weather you should be fine. With that long a trip I'd definitely change your oil right before you go - at your car's mileage, the plugs and wires will need replaced along with the fuel filter. I also as earlier stated went with synthetics in the manual tranny and differential (that's not need though). A downpipe and upgraded radiator would definitely help keep the temps down though on a long trip.

I was going to order a downpipe a couple weeks ago but a guy from Tri Point Engineering warned me not to. He said that if I did, I would need to upgrade the fuel system or find a way to manage the lean condition with a fuel computer.
What radiator is the best direct bolt in for street use? I was thinking about the Fluidyne unit.

You will be fine with just a downpipe on it. Usually after 2 mods you will start having to look into getting a fuel management system, but with merely a dp you will be fine. Good luck with the car.

thats not paint....
I drove from Missouri to the east coast w/o any hangups... it was about a 10 hour trip. Just go easy on her and she will be fine. Also make sure all the maintance that needs to, has been done before you start the trip.
