What are you trying to find out? Differences versus the 99+ 3rd brake assembly?
I'll take pics for you tonight if someone else doesn't

On my 94 3rd brake light, the red lens inside is down under the clear outer lens. And my 99+ light has the red lens right at the visible surface.
Sorry I forgot about the pics earlier. Get them tonight for you.

That is what I have observed too. 99 spec brake light seems to be right under the surface of the lens. US spec lights seem to be recessed and further away from the surface. I should be able to take pics tomorrow.

Well I forgot I traded off the 99 3rd brake to a friend. Here is a pic of the 93-95 light with the red lens set back under the cover.

Ok,

Here is what I have:

US spec - 286-61639 JAPAN SAE U 3 90 DOT
99 spec - 286-61639A JAPAN SAE 3 U3 95 DOT

I hope the pics show the difference. US spec lights appear to be about 1/2" below the surface while 99 spec appear to be flush to the surface.

It is really hard to explain with the pics, but you do see a difference in person.

FWIW I've got one from a '93 JDM Type R and one from a UK model and they were both the 90 DOT version, identical to your US market ones. Guess it was a year-specific upgrade rather than market or model

You may be correct with that statement. I have had my hands on many lights but really am not sure when they were changed.

It was the '96 upgrade to Series 7 when the main rear lights changed, so I guess it would have been then? I wonder if it was a cost or a performance issue, hard to see any real benefit in either version

It was probably a cost issue. 95dot reflector is molded into the taillight lens where 90dot reflector is a separate piece inside the taillight and over half of it is covered up by the lens. A lot less material and steps in making the 95dot.

I prefer the 90dot as it looks a lot cleaner and matches the outer tails better.

Now that you've brought this to my attention, I like the 93-95 US spec one better.

Hopefully the us spec ones make your modification a bit easier.

Thanks for documenting this! It's funny that after all these years we're still finding these differences.
