Need opinion on these stock twins before I buy them

Hey

I found a set of twins for sale for 200 Euros, roughly $270. Apparently they came of a FD with 65k km, about 40k miles. And the seller assures me they are in great condition.

I'm not an expert so from the photos I cant tell much except that there seems to be no cracks on the turbo manifold.

Also included in the price is the exhaust manifold.

Please let me know what you think before I buy them. In one of the photos you can see a bit of oil on the second turbo...

Finding a set of good twins is rare in Europe..you dont see them for sale as often as you do in the states.

I'm sure there is some threads round here about buying used turbos. They look quite clean to me but you really need to put your hands on these things and have a proper look. Your looking for little to no shaft play.

What is the shaft play like? Should have no in/out play and only a little side to side. I cant see any cracks in the usual spots. However, another common crack area is the wastegate, but you cannot inspect this area without dismantling the turbos. Ordering second hand twins is a bit hit or miss online from my exp.

Did they come off a motor that blew an apex seal? If so 9 times out of 10 you will have damage to a turbine wheel.

If the turbine wheel is chipped the assembly will be out of balance and will fail prematurely. I would have him crack them open and shop pictures of the turbine wheels.

As has been said you really need to get your hands on them to make an informed decision. That being said $270 for a set of core twins with manifolds is a good deal as well. You may want to plan on picking them up, deal with international shipping, and have BNR do a once over/rebuild. You can also get inexpensive CHRA's from him as well.

Thanks for the advice. I really wish I could see them in person but that's not an option considering the seller is in Germany. But I will try to get as much info and additional photos on them as possible.

Finding cores without any cracks is a lucky find. Even if you had to have them freshened up as suggested it seems like a good start.

Why do you need them?

Well I'm having issues with my turbos, more specifically the primary. I troubleshooted the entire system, checked all the solenoids and valves etc...and everything seams to be working good which makes me believe that the issue is actually with the turbos thems self. And they are 120k miles old...and leaking oil everywhere, and also one of the studs on the secondary intake is bad. So I figured I might get these since you dont see them for sale often around here. And as you said I can always use them as a good core for a rebuild/BNR upgrade etc...

If you are able to find out more information on the seller, that would be helpful. Does he have an e-bay account? If so, that would have a rating on it. Maybe a seller's rating from another website. If the seller's reputation is solid, the turbos are likely to be as good as he states.
