Exclamation Need help with Wiring Harness and Parts Fiche

I'm trying to identify the correct wiring harness for the charging system (alternator). The dual (+) wire going to the alternator has melted and I need to know if I can replace just that wire (if so, how)... or will I need to purchase that wiring harness (if so, which part number is it)?

Thanks in advance.

it should be a fairly straight forward replacement.

I would just use audio 4 guage wire.

Mostly likely it goes back to the starter. Haven't check the FD's but the FC's are like that.

While ur at it i would reground your engine. They use a nasty grounding strap on these cars (better than FC's though)

Which wires? The large wire that is clamped by a nut on the alternator (output) or the plastic plug with two wires that plugs into the rear of the alt (feild winding)?

I'm refering to the wires connected by a nut on the back of the alternator (output). It is not a single wire. It is 2 small gauge wires.

That is the output from the alternator and you can safely use whatever wire you want as long as it's the proper gauge. If the two wires terminate at the same place, tou can replace them with one larger one. If they do not then somebody is using the alternator output as a tap to the battery (that's where the output goes) and you'll need to track the other end down. My '93 base only has one wire on the alt output.

I think the 2 wires go to the 120a main fuse next to the battery. I'll have to cut open the loom to check... this is going to be fun

Just use an ohm meter and you can prove to yourself where they go without cutting the harness open.

Well, if it's a (+) positive terminal, wouldn't it show a reading everywhere there's a positive connection?

Not if you first disconnect the positive terminal from the battery...

Well, if it connects to the positive terminal through the 120a fuse, wouldn't every wire connected to it have continuity with those wires? How will you know which wire is the correct one when using an ohm meter?

The output wires on the alternator go straight to the battery. You said you have two so somebody added one it looks like. Disconnect the two wires at the alternator end and disconnect the positive batt terminal. Use an ohm meter to check each wire seperately for continuity at the battery post on the fuse block. If they both have continuity they both run to the fuse block. If one has continuity and one doesn't that means someone was using the one that doesn't as a way to tap 12v from the battery, so that wire would be going somewhere other than the battery. First thing I would suspect is some sort of aftermarket electronics; like an ignition or audio amp for instance.
