was the starter you installed new or used?
if you have to tap on it to start is then its is bad
also check the resistance in the wire form the starter to the battery.

you could of got a bad rebuilt starter....its happened to me, rare but it happens...
like everyone else said if you have to tap on it , its bad...

also check the wires going to the starter, make sure there not corroded...
get a test light and check wires going to and from ...

Then it sounds like a defect starter or an error in the installation.

Check wires for loose connections.
