Yesterday went outside to find that my 93 FD was leaking coolant. I didn't want to drive it so I called a tow company to come pick it up and take it to the dealership so they could take care of it. I thought it would be a minor fix but when I went to the dealership today to see what kind of progress they had made the Service Manager said that they weren't gonna touch the car. He said that the technician that was working on the car had told him the leak was coming from a hose that goes to the turbo. He also told the Service manager that when He looked under the car he saw signs of Oil and said that my car was leaking around the rotar housing. Is this possible to diagnose from looking underneath the car?? So it turns out that the Service manager is telling me that I need a new engine and that it would be around $7,000 dollars. I asked him if he knew anyother mechanics in the San Diego area that worked on these cars and he said no. To top things off he told me that my best bet would be to trade my car in on a new rx-8. Is this guy trying to scam me or what?

 

Yes, he ******' with ya. Basically, dealerships HATE these cars, as they're more trouble than they're worth. You are seeing the end of ten years of pain and suffering between dealers and customers on these cars.

First, the turbo hoses are not that difficult to replace. You really could do this yourself, and there is lots of help on this forum if you need it.

Next, oil leaks are always happening on this car. It might be the oil pan, a total pain in the ***. It could be the rear seal, which is difficult. It could be the front cover, an absolute nightmare. It could be the turbos getting to the end of their life. It could be,,, you get the idea.

So. Take your car to a rotary expert. Search the west forum to find a good shop that specializes in this car. GET YOUR CAR OUT OF THE DEALER!!

And unless you want to go slower for more money with four seats, don't trade it. Why'd you buy it in the first place otherwise?

That kind of **** is exactly why the 3rd gen failed to sell in the US and why the rotary engine got such a bad reputation for failure.

It's too bad you took it to a dealer first instead of a dedicated rotary shop. Get your car back and do a search in the West Forum for San Diego shops. There are also many good shops in the LA area.

As spurvo pointed out, it sounds like it's just one of the turbo coolant lines that went out. The oil leak is best left to an experienced rotary mechanic to fix -- if it's bad enough to really need fixing.

 

seriosly get your car out of the dealer! even IF you did need a new engine $7K wtf they're talking out of their asses. search around for a mechanic in your area who knows a thing or two about rotaries and take it there.

 

Dealer ships are even know to kcuf up your car even more. When i bought my 93, i went to the dealer and they tried to rip me off. The only good a dealership is good for is if you a buying an oil filter.
