Need help with egr

Well my car failed the smog test twice and the guy told me it was misfiring. So I changed the plugs and some of the wires weren't in all the way. Then I decided to do the vacuum lines while I was at it. I then put about 200 hundred miles on the car and it was running great but then it started to misfire again and my check engine line came on. The code was for the EGR. I then drove the car the next day and when I drove the car hard for a while the light kept coming back on.
So I decided to change the EGR valve but when I checked it, it was holding vacuum and when I took it out it had like zero carbon build up? I have a '94 base model, what do you guys think maybe the sensor is bad or something? I don't feel like paying close to $183 to get an EGR from the dealer and to find out that wasn't my problem. What do you guys think it is? If you guys know where I can get a cheaper EGR Valve that would help out too.

See the last message in the thread.

Well, I have tried a number of times to follow this link I posted with no luck. Search isn't finding it either when I search by title. I can find it if I search by user (me). All I can tell you is the thread is titled "EGR Time" and I started it. If you can find it, you may get an answer.

In case you don't, what I found was that the EGR has a cardboard "gasket" with a pin hole in it. I think my EGR stopped working because the pin hole was blocked.

Thanks BLKTOPTRVL, I'll look at my EGR gasket to see if its blocked. I'll do the member search under your name to look for the thread also.
