Push the clip in with two screw drivers (one on each side) if that doesn't work, just unbolt the pressure plate.

Awesome man, who's that dirty bastard standing next to your car though? I'd beat his *** if I were you

Now start eliminating stuff and you can have an engine out in about 30 minutes start to finish

I am currently doing a motor swap too. I spent 6hrs. the other day trying to separtate the engine and tranny. I've never heard that there is a clip holding the collar to the pressure plate. That explains a lot. But why doesn't the manual say anything about this?

I have since bolted it back to the engine and started disconnecting the tranny from the car. I will just pull it all as a unit.
I just hope I didn't do any damage with all the prying and pulling I did in that 6 hours of frustration.

XSTransAm, how do you plan to get the tranny and clutch and motor lined up with it in the car? After going through what I did, I don't think I could do it.

The manual does say how to separate it, it just doesn't do a good job of it. It's one of those that you understand what they are saying "after" you have done it.

The clip is called the "wedge collar". If you bent it, I would highly suggest ordering a new one.

I would stick the tranny on the engine outside the car if you can. It will probably be easier unless you have a tranny jack.

There is a procedure in the manual for lining up the driveline, so make sure you check it out when bolting everything back up. Good luck!

OK, I just got the engine and tranny out, together.
I really should have done it this way to start with.

It was kind of a PIA to unbolt the PPF with its 130lbs./ft of torque on the nuts. This leads me to my question...
Is it OK to reuse the nuts and bolt on the PPF? The manual is pretty adamant about replacing them.

I reused mine. It's probably a good idea to replace the high torqued bolts every now and then but mine seemed to be in decent shape at the time.

well i took all the parts off the engine today and crated it up. To my suprise the stock twins are in excellent shape except for one fin being a little bent... so im gonna send them out to agpturbo or forcedperformance to have them rebuilt, then i will sell them.

To my avail i couldent see any apex broken through the exhaust port. but i did find a part of the rotor that was pretty badly gouged, and i could see around the housing where it had scraped up the side..

edit: holy crap that picture came out big

you are looking at the side of the rotor through the exhaust port.

a word of advice - REPLACE THE CLUTCH FORK while you can.

I did the whole pull and OH the engine - 4,000 miles later - clutch fork cracked. to go back in and pull the tranny...f****! - just spend the $70 or so and get a new one.

silver93 has a good point, while you are in there replace the fork. That way you know its good. Also, make sure, abso-positively sure that you put the clutch disc in correctly. Look at the manual, it has a crappy pic, but if you look at it enough, you'll see it. My car was down 3 more weeks bc I had the disc itself in wrong. Also, when you put it back together, I've had success two ways. One, I bolted the flywheel, clutch, and PP to the motor, then installed it the car, popping it with some force and a crow bar onto the tranny. This works, if you have an extra person, and a tranny jack, or get creative with a regular jack. The other way was to put the flywheel on the motor, and the clutch and PP on the tranny. The only difficult thing about this way is lining up the posts on the flywheel to the PP, but its not all that difficult to do, and worked rather well for me. Again, get as many friends over as you can, and take your time. Good luck.
