Red face Need haelp dropping the gas tank

I've searched with no luck on proceedures for dropping a gas tank from an FD. Any info, pictures or links would be soo great. Oh and is it necessary to put a new gasket on the fuel pump housing port ( on the top visable from the trunk)?

No, it is not necessary to replace that gasket. However, I would inspect it to make sure it is not torn when you were removing it reaching to the pump.

First, you jack the car up and remove the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. THERE IS a drain plug, however it could be covered with manufacturer's anti-rust plastic-like sprayed stuff all over. Look hard and try feeling for it with your hand if you cant see it. Should be near the center of the tank.

Then make sure you replace the gasket for that drain plug and to ensure no leak. Use taflon tape on the threads of the drain plug.

Then I would put a piece of long wood on top of a jack and place it under the gas tank. Then release the bolts holding the fuel tank and slowly level down the gas tank itself. Good luck =]

I wish I had some pictures, but once you get under there it's really pretty easy. You have 2 straps that hold the tank to the chassis. But before you take those off make sure you disconnect the fuel pump/fuel level connector on top of the tank and disconnect all of the lines on top also. From the bottom you will have to disconnect the fuel filler from the tank, or you can unbolt the filler neck from the car. To disconnect the filler neck from the car just open your fuel door, remove the nuts/bolts on the metal circular panel around the neck and remove the cap and it should be able to slide out with the tank. Also, If I remember correctly, there is a ground strap from the tank to the chassis on the driver's side that you may have trouble seeing until you actually start to drop the tank. It's pretty easy to do, just make sure the tank is empty so it's not so heavy.

I'm debating doing this to clean out the tank. I did it on my 240, and it was pretty easy. My tank looked fairly clean when I peeked in the fuel pump hole, though that kind of means nothing. That, and my car has now been sitting for 6 months, with premix no less. Let me know how it goes!
