Need a diagnosis on AC - Idle
I have been unable to root this one out.
The car starts fine regardless of the circumstance. Never been a problem. It is an auto.
No smoke, but a rich smell. Will go to 3000 on warmup. If I blip it, it goes to about 2000 and warms there. Will idle down to about 1100.. On warmup it is sometimes rough idle, but it smoothes out when warm.
I could set the idle lower, but it idles too low in gear.
At this set point, it is ok with fans on and/or lights. When the AC comes on, it won't idle at all. Wants to die. On the highway, there is enough engine speed to overcome and there is no problem.
When I connect the TEN and GND to set the idle, there is no change in engine speed. I am wondering if this all points to the IAC valve. I checked it out with an ohmmeter and it was in spec. Is there a way to check it by disconnecting?
Also, when I drive the car and it is warm, the idle comes to about 800. If I put it in park, it stays fairly low. If I blip the throttle, it jumps back up to 1100 and stays there. If I put it in gear it jumps down to 800 and stays there. All new vacuum lines, and I have checked the dash pot. Not sure how to adjust all the different air flow adjustments in the throttle body..... and I have read many of the posts on this but none seem the same...

You may just have a corroded A/C switch. When you turn on the A/C it's supposed to increase the idle RPM. Check out the shop manual - it's discussed in there.
