Unhappy Need advise on 3rd gen price

OK, well this guy I know has a 93, VR touring, with 93k miles. It has apexi intake, and a cat-back(custom I think). It has a power FC too. Anyway, about a month ago the car overheated on his way home, and he didnt pull over, he just kept driving and it just shut off about a block from his house. ( Hes an idiot, I know) Anyway, the car doesnt start anymore so im pretty sure the motor is blown. I dont think he really knows much about the car, and its just been sitting in the garage ever since then. I want to buy his car, the rest of it is really nice, no scratches or anything. I was just wondering how much you think I should offer, I was thinking like 6k? Is that reasonable? Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've been thinking about buying an FD for cheap through this method, then just having the rebuild done. I've researched what cars in similar condition have been going for and probably the minimum you could get it for would be 5500, but I haven't seen many go for more than 7500 with a blown motor. If all it needs is a motor, its still a good deal, even with the cost of a rebuild, it would still be less than the cost of a running FD in decent condition.

If he doesn't know anything about the car or doesn't care to pull over if its overheating, he probably doesn't know what it is worth. Start with a low offer like $5000, then go up if need be. Remember the rebuild will cost a minimum of $3500 if done correctly and replace everything you can while it is apart.

I would just guess that the car would be worth about $7k is the exterior is in real good shape.

I talked to this guy at the auto show yesterday (At the mazda booth) and he said the renesis is very similar to the REW in terms of size and design. That is, it should be able to fit into an FD and hook up to the turbos. Supposedly Mazda engineers are currently building a turbo system for it, and right now they're just testing with the FD sequential twin. . . Maybe you should wait a bit, and then buy a blown engine RX-7 only to replace it's engine with a renesis. You'd have to get a new ECU or customize the one you have, but you would have a very fast, reliable machine in the end that also is a ULEV.

I don't think the REW turbos setup can bolt directly to the Renesis engine as the Renesis is a side exhaust port engine while the REW is peripheral. At least that is my understanding. Perhaps with new plumbing...

If he dosent know **** about the car i dont know about buying it. He could have missed maintenace(i know dosent really matter if engine is trashed) but, again, i just would have everything checked out on the car before i considered buying it. His clutch is pry shot, pry needs new brakes. Turbos could possibly need some major work........just all things to consider.
