Exclamation Is it Necessary to run an O2 Sensor?!?

Hi,

I just have a quick, possibly stupid, question:

Is it necessary for me to run an O2 sensor?

I basically only have one bung in my downpipe and I'd like to run a wideband so I was wondering whether I'll have any issues with not running an O2 sensor. My car doesn't need to pass emissions ever again so that's not a concern. I'm also running a PowerFC. Please let me know...

TIA ,
Rizwan

With a PFC (and a Datalogit) you can turn off O2 feedback so the stock sensor will be ignored.

I believe you can just turn off the 02 sensor with the commander and the only thing that will happen without it is your gas mileage will go down as far as I understand and with gas prices how they are today welding that bung in will pay off.

Gas mileage may not necessarily get worse and it is possible to get slightly better mileage with tuning. I never did a before-and-after comparison because I get such pathetic mileage anyway (and only drive a 2k miles per year) but some people have reported next to no difference after turning off O2 feedback with the PFC's base map.

I drove my car for about a week with the O2 wire cut right off (accident - long story) and it made no (noticeable) difference to the drivability. That’s on a stock ECU.

FWIW I've ran it for well over a year with it turned off. Car ran exactly the same with it off.

With the O2 feedback control turned off there is no need for a sensor.

Thanks for the help everyone! So, will I "need" a datalogit to turn off O2 sensor feedback? I don't even have a commander...

I drive less than 1000 or so miles a year so I'm not concerned about gas mileage. I was just wondering if I remove the O2 sensor without any other precautions taken (simply pull it out) will I be okay?

I wouldn't stick the wideband sensor that close to the turbo's (stock bung).

Just a thought.

yea i have mine out and my AEM wideband plugged into the bung, and it works fine. Just like they said, all you need is a commander to turn off the O2 sensor control.

with tuning you can actually get better MPG with o2 feedback off. if you dont tune the cruise areas MPG will probably suffer slightly and build a bit more carbon up in the engine, but it will drive fine.

Some, if not most wideband sensors also have a wire for narrow band simulation, You hook this wire up to where the stock o2 wire is. my LC-1 has this, though i disconnected it after about a week because i chose not to use o2 feedback.

If your bung is right after the turbos you will need a heatsink or the sensor will burn up prematurely. It's better to have the sensor installed at the end of the downpipe in the 12 o clock position to keep moisture from getting stuck on the sensor, and to minimize unnecessary heat from being to close to the combustion chambers.
