Are my turbos bad?

I was racing a friend with an El Cameno tody and he said that I was shooting blue smoke out my tail pipe. So I go to test it out. when I rev up slowly im good. but when im hitting boost (dont have bosst meater so I dont know how much) my oil pressure drops to about 40-50 psi. It makes me think turbos. but not sure. also im a dumbass and was runing 87 oct. Also only getting 12 mpg on a mostly stock motor (only intake has been upgraded)

It is not a good idea to be boosting like that on 87 octane... And you really should not even be putting it in your car.

blue smoke means oil, maybe your oil seals are going bad. Do you have oil in your intake and IC?
No comment on the 87 octane. that was just plain stupid to even try to race someone with a tank of 87 octane fuel....

How many miles do you have on the motor and turbos. I would venture a guess and say both are probably on their way out.

As far as emmissons go the car has a bad EGR valve. and the guy I bought it from Had a somg cert already. But I doubt it was a real one.

The guy said the motor was rebult around 70,000 mi so it has about 30k mi on it. I dont think the turbos have ever been replaced so they have about 100k on them.

Edit : I have only had the car for 2 weeks.

Magus,

How do you space out when gassing up? We already have crappy 91 octane in CA here and you put 87 in?

Anyways, I would suggest getting a boost gauge. If you don't have a boost gauge, I'm guessing you don't have a controller either?

I would worry about building your car up and making it last than bragging rights and races. It's fun to race, but that fun will only last so long if you don't take care of the car first.

Hope everything is fine with your car and have fun by keeping the car strong and running.

The only reason I even raced him is cause he was talking a buch of **** about the car. He still claims he won. But I was not the one looking at his exaust.

I know the 87 oct was a bad mestake. Im sorry about that please stop bringing it up. I did not put it in on purpose and will make sure to do the right thing in the future with 91+ oct.

It doesn't matter if people talk bad about the car or not, be mature about it and don't put other peoples lives in danger just to "prove a point"

for example "your a idoit and should never put 87 oct in your tank." does not help.

but saying "you know you should put 91 oct in your motor to help it run better with boost." does help.

Im a noob when it come to cars and all im asking is for help.

If you're getting MPG *THAT* low, you generally have things wrong with your car. I typically get 18mpg in the city.

Your turbos could be bad - that's quite possible, but there are many simple things, like messed up PCV systems, that can draw oil into the engine to be burned.

You should never put 87 in the tank, because low octane promotes detonation and detonation will simply destroy your motor. This is the one thing that rotarys cannot tolerate but isn't a big deal with piston engines. It has nothing to do with racing either, since you can very, very easily hit max boost in 5th gear on the highway.

As for the oil burn, take it to a good rotary mechanic and get it properly diagnosed. For that matter, have it looked over head to toe. While I would trust your mechanic to do a compression test properly, it's far better to travel for a reputable rotary mechanic.

Turbo's are bad

My turbo's are bad on mine and it sounds like you have almost the same problem as me. Does blue smoke come out everytime you start your car in the morning? If you do, put it in first gear and start it every time the engine and turbo's are cold. This way not that much blue smoke comes out because it doesnt' rev up to high. I find oil in the intercooler piping so if you have it to, it's the turbo's. Also blue smoke stops coming out when it's at opperating temperature but if i'm racing someone blue smoke does blow out and if i drive normal, nothing comes out. Hopefully helped you out or who ever has the same problem.

Europe uses a different rating system than the US.
