my source for used dunlop GT racing tires
a great track buddy of mine who races a cobra R told me to try these and i really like em, some have asked where I get them, so here is my source:

Bob has been great to deal with and can help you figure out what size you should get. (tell him Damian sent ya)
here are some notes on the tires based on my limited knowledge:
1) the are GT tires used for qualifying or whatever, basically they are just scrubbed in but the racing teams will not use them again
2) they are NOT street leagal, they are racing slicks that are ment for track only use, they are not DOT
3) if needed the tires are 'scrapped', that means all marbles are taken off and the surface is smoothed
4) the tires are checked for any damage or bad spots, and only a certain tread depth will pass inspection, too much wear and the tire is not used

and as far as cost, as clayne mentioneed right now they are $75 each (and like $5 per tire for scrapping if they need it)and on our relativly light cars they last pretty long depending on how aggressive you drive, im pretty a concervative driver so they last me 3-4 events. however, I have seen some heavier cars cord them in one event driving hard.

"marbles" are the shreds of tire rubber left on the track and pushed off line. If you run off line with hot race tires, you'll pick up some of those shreds which can sort of melt together with your tires. This makes a nice "ka-thump, ka-thump", vibration or shudder, and can make it tough to balance the tires. Bob is simply scraping the tires to get these pieces off.

Sure :-) I'm no expert and have only used them at a handful of events now but I'll give my opinion so far:

they grip like motherf_ckers... thats why :-)
seriously though, they are almost 1" narrower than the kumo ecstas that I used before and provide way more overall grip.

at least not to any standard tire you can get a tirerack, the hoosiers maybe in terms of grip, but not in terms of cost, and i factor cost in when 'comparing'. dont forget thay are very soft compound so they are not ment for longevity, however with our lighter cars they should last at least a 3-4 events if your alingment is set corerctly to wear the tire evenly and you drive without sliding all over the place :-)

you do not want to use them in any kind of wet conditions

heavy car = a lap or 2, light car like ours, it take a bit more time warm up - or just being more aggressive in warming them up (hehehe), I usually dont push till the 2nd or 3rd lap anyway, to get the tires/race brake pads fully to temp.

I guess I shouldn't have assumed that these Dunlops are like other Rcompounds but I didn't know what else to compare them to

yeah, i ment the other tires dont compare to the dunlops, the dunlops are much better in terms of the grip/cost ratio

i hear ya, for me it went like this.... imagine putting a $100 cheaper tire on, that is narrower, but has more grip :-)
... this all = a big smile after a few laps :-)
BUT they are kinda tough to get used to, they behave a bit different than other tires. you have to do a few events with them to get used to how they act and start really using the grip they provide...but again, im no expert.
