are my shift bushings on their way out??
Hey every1,
I got a ? about my shift bushings. Sometimes i miss the 2nd to 3rd shift. But it only happens when the shift **** is towards the right side of the gate, so im thinking my shifter might be grabbin 3rd and 5th @ the same time. Could this prob. be fixed with a short-shifter or new shift bushings? or do u think it might be some other problem like synchros? plmk what ya think.
Peace,
Zach

I know that it's common for the nylon bushing to break, so that could well be your problem. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a part number for the bushing, and my local dealer sucks. I just ordered a nylon, and an aluminum bushing from Mazdatrix, and they should arrive next week sometime. I expect to find my original nylon bushing broken since I have some play. I'm also putting in a B&M short shifter, since the RX-7 store has them on sale for $159.
Good luck,

Missing the 2-3 shift is common. Your probably ending up in 5th gear or grinding into 5th right?
It would be a good idea to check your shifter bushings, there are actually several in there. To re-do the stock set-up here is a mostly complete list, unfortunately I don't have part #'s anymore.
Rubber shift boot, the one that attaches to the trans with 3 bolts.
Plastic "end cap" fits on the very bottom of the shifter
Two nylon "cups" one fits above the shifter (have to remove the rubber boot to get it on/off)
The other one fits in the trans.
2 wavy washers, fit above/below the nylon cups listed above.
Finally there is a little plastic guide that fits in the shifter itself, it might be worn too.
You probably don't need all the parts but they are cheap and while your doing some of them you might as well do all of them.
All that said, you might also do a search for "shift select spindle" and get the updated one. Mazda lists it as the same part # but in 94 they made the spring stiffer to reduce the chances of missing the 2-3 shift.
Final thing, I've seen Mazda dealer installed trannys that don't have any oil or grease in the shifter housing. There should be gear oil in the shifter housing AND grease the "ball" of the shifter. This will make a HUGE difference in shifter accuracy and make the bushings last a long time.
Good luck!
All the shifter bushings can be easily done by just taking the shifter out of the trans.

short shifters will help allieviate this problem imo because they provide a more precise shift. However, if you have synchro problems, a short shifter will only make matters worse because it is shifting in a shorter amount of time, therefore the synchros have less time to match gear speeds.

Get rid of that POS OEM crap, and get a short shifter. I have the Pettit's unit and I love it. Also, my friend had the B&M and I was impressed with that unit too. It is definitely one of the best mods to do to an FD.
