My New Quest For An 11 Sec Street Car

Ok everyone, I've been off the board for a while. I am a little depressed since my engine went out in Dec. But it's a new year and I am ready to get the car where I want it... 11 sec's or bust (no pun intended). I would actually want some reliablity, too.

Here are my questions:

1. Do I need a street port or can I break 11's with a reman motor?

2. Can some place fabricate a special tubular exhaust manifold for my turbo (see picture attached)?

3. I have a downpipe and cat-back so far, please list theminimal things I will need to do it safely.

I am very serious about this, so any help would be appreciated, thanks!

check out the single turbo section. You will get the most help there and I'm sure someone there can make you a manifold. Running 11s should not be too hard for a single turbo fd. There are a good number of guys running 11s on stock twins.

you could run 11s on stock turbos and engine, but you will be pushin the limit of reliability. you could run 11s with a ported motor and any single turbo, and it will be much more reliable. check out the single turbo section....you will find a lot of help there.

I'd say you could get into the 11's on stock ports, but your single will be much much happier with some extra exhaust gases. Getting a manifold made isnt too hard. PM crispeed. I'm getting mine made from a guy in Australia, $760 (AUD) + shipping for stainless. In addition to the turbo and pipe you already have, you will need:

High flow fuel pump
Bigger primary and secondary injectors
Standalone ECU (Haltech, PFC, New AEM unit)
FMIC or large SMIC
Street/Strip clutch and lightweight flywheel

There is much more but these are the basics.

to do what right?? run 11s on stock engine/turbos?? run 11s on single turbo/stock engine?? run 11s on single turbo/ported engine??

you can easily run 11s on a single turbo and stock engine, but it will take a little more than if you were running a ported engine.

single turbo kit....$3000
fuel system/standalone ECU....$2000
full exhaust....$800
clutch.....$500
KAAZ rear diff....$800
drag radials....$300

roughly $7500 to run 11s all day with that setup...if you could drive.

Labor and tuning??? I ran 11.6 with an M2 ECU. There is not tuning needed. As far as labor... thats why they call them bolt ons. Trust me, the parts you need to run 11s are very easy to bolt on.

What you need to run 11's:

IC $1500
ECU $700
Exhaust <$1000
some more boost (manual controller) $5
Slicks $350

did I miss anything?

I got an 18"x12"x3" bar and plate FMIC with end-tanks welded on for $1200 AUD (depends on the conversion ratio, right now thats $624.84 US). All I need is piping, which aint gonna cost $600-800 (to equal the price of a Greddy kit). These IC are just as good as any Greddy!!!!!! Sheesh!!!!

in response to the last post

I want to see the time slips for your car....in regards to the last post. I simply dont believe you.

if you had that mod list...a huge intercooler, larger injectors and a ported motor to go with those mods of yours.... then Id believe you.

jason
94peg

here is my guess on high 11s...I wont be running my car again at the track til march so Im not sure....break in time on the motah will be all thru feb.

streetport
intercooler
intake
exhaust
DP
14lbs of boost or so
good tires
power fc or other
fuel system to handle the boost
a good clutch
m2 turbos or better to put the nail in the coffin
good driving

I can testify to Atihun's claim, I've ridden in the car... Pretty fast! Anyways with some turbo work and some good *** tires definatley in the 11's with the basics:

IC $1500 (need)
ECU $700 (need)
Exhaust <$1000 (have)
some more boost (manual controller) $5 (have)
Slicks $350 (need)

I'll have about $2500 in the engine (Mazda reman)
$1000 for FMIC w/piping
$100 for a mid-pipe
$500-700 ECU or PFC $1000
$350 for slicks

Grand total >$5000 to run 11's is good enough for me!

Ill say it again

in response to the last post....if those are your mods...and those are your only mods then you ARE NOT going to hit 11s. If you think you will then you have probably never been to the track.

that mod list will get you 12.2-12.7 at best (from what Ive seen watching the races and from my experience)....even with a great launch and 14lbs of boost....dont believe me...lets go over to the track...its close enough for a saturday afternoon trip.

you will blow your motor unless you do the fuel system too....and youll need the pwer fc to handle the larger injectors needed.

you will not SAFELY run 11s without fuel and a good ecu as well as the diff, better apex seals, cooling system, dowl pinning, street port etc...

you dont believe me....when you get your car back Ill personally head over to the track with you after you break in your motor...and you can bring the guy above from rancho santo marg...we can all run our cars to get a good perspective of where we stand...not in competition..but just to see what else we need to do. I expect to be there with my latest setup...but we shall see.

Im not trying to be a dick or anything....Im just being honest. Last time I was at the track TWO third gens wiped out their motors because they did not have a fuel system or the proper tuning to go with their mods... one car didnt make it home...the other limped on one rotor (mine)...I had your mod list you are wishing for...and then I had no stinking motor.

My honest guess is mid twelves for both of your cars...on a good run.

if you have the TIME SLIPS to show then I'll be humbled.

PS mid twelves feels fast...really fast. seat of the pants clocks are often way off.

Well Jason,

I think if you read my post CLOSELY, you will see that I did say I THINK LOW 12s, and MAYBE high 11s. The reason I was stating this is to try to show how much of a difference you need in setup. I then forgot to repost; my bad.

Yes I do run, have been running at 13 to 14 psi, for over a year on the PFC. The car is now at 94K.

So what is your point? You agreed with me that my mods can pull low 12s. There are others on this forum that have done the same with similar mods.

No, I do not have an IC yet, and yes my injectors are at their safety limits. However, the car has the fuel it needs, and the PFC tuning is conservative. (It was tuned to also have an IC and ported motor, so I'm pretty sure that there is plenty of fuel there and the timing is safe).

As for going to the track, that would be great, I would love to go. No I have not taken my car to the track before.

track...

my break in time for my car will be at least through part of the month of feb...new motor new goodies...careful me.

I would like to go to the track with ya in feb though.

Ill bet right now that you are hitting a 12.7 on your best run. but thats just me..Honestly, I think you would be hard pressed to get that...but we shall see. It is possible that you are an amazing driver and that you could pull lower into the twelves...but if it is your first time at the track things could be not quite what you expect.

I replied not to say that you cannot do it...just to say that the both of you are being very hopeful...very hopeful.

six months ago I thought I was running 12.3's or so...raced cars that had run low low twelves and had been very very close....went to the track and ran low 13's hahaha...my best run was mid twelves and I popped my motor. simple as that. I had most of your mod list and a streetport at the time with brand new tires.

Im definitely curious to see how we do with our cars though...your car does sound great...my motor is done...waiting for the turbo upgrade to be finished...will let ya know when it is...

later

When I was talking about the 12s, I was talking about the car, not necessarily me getting it into the 12s myself. I drive the car very well, but I don't know really how well. And I was stating that the car was capable of low 12s with the mods on it. I have not taken it to the track because I am not a big fan of wheel hop; I amplanning a KAAZ to go along with the bushings from Jim; that should definitely protect the back end. Anyways, no need to beat a dead horse.

Your setup is what I have been planning on all along. That is why I asked Ray to tune the PFC that way; but my damn motor is still running strong !

By the way, has M2 figured out the issues with the twins? (ie. power and oil leak) I really like those turbos, I am not yet inclined to go the single route, especially since we are here in So.Cal and need to get these cars smogged somehow.

Do you have your car at a local shop, ie. RRR in Santa Ana?

After you get your engine broken in, I would love to get a ride in that beast; that is if you don't mind.

sure...

sure thing...Ill let you know when it is done.

I do use rrr in SA for the motor work...

the m2 set up still needs mods to the stock setup in order to run properly...yes.

I cant wait to ride in the "beast" either..haha...its been a few months of gathering parts, upgrades and all that and I sure miss driving it.

Im hoping for low low twelves with my setup...with me driving. we shall see.

I ran 11.7@118 on stock injectors, stock pump, street ported motor, M2 ecu, intake, full exhaust and some slicks. My rear held up and I didn't blow Call me lucky I guess.
http://members.tripod.com/modifiedrx7/images/Scan1.jpg

As for the brand name comment on ICs... Even if you did get the core for $624.84 you would have to get pipes bent (as you mentioned). I'm not sure how much this would be but I'm sure it isn't cheap if you can even find a good aluminum welder in your area to construct them. Then there is a duct. I'm not good enough or know someone that is good enough to construct an air duct out of fiberglass. If I were to pay someone to constuct one for me, I would expect to pay at least a few hundred dollars for one. Don't forget the silicon couplers and clamps. Suddenly that $624.84 IC has grown to over $1200. Now if you can do custom fabrication then I can see where you would save some money doing it yourself. If not then I would rather buy a race proven IC from M2. You will pay a little extra but won't have to deal with all the headaches of piecing all the parts together and finding the right people to do the custom fabrications.

IC- $624.84
custom aluminum pipes- $200
couplers and constant torque clamps- $100
Fiberglass IC duct- $300-$400

Total- $1224.84 - $1324.84

You are completely right. That and I kinda missed the fact you guys were talking about running stock twins. The race proven M2 IC would do no good for me, as I would still have to get custom pipes made to fit my turbo.

But c'mon.....you know alot of people out there suffer from SEVERE name-branditis.
