Unhappy my first rotary, HELP!!

Hey guys,

I just bought a 3rd gen around a month ago with <1k on a rebuilt engine, I finally got some parts together and changed out my fluids. I installed a new radiator, AST, changed the coolant and oil, and reconnected the battery to try to start it up.

Before, the car ran fine, cold starts would idle at 3k, then drop down to 1.5k.

Now, it sounded like ****, with all this smoke coming out the tail pipe. The best i can describe it is a 4 banger piston running only on 3 pistons. Before, sometimes during start up, I'd get a puff of smoke, but this time, even if i let it idle for a bit with the shitty idle, smoke would keep coming out, enough to fill up my garage. If i blip the throttle to keep it from staying at 3k, it would drop down to 700-800 instead of 1.5k.

help! any tips would be appreciated!

What color smoke is it - blue, white, black

Does the smoke have a smell? Try to describe it.

When you flushed your coolant, did you see any foreign material (metal shavings, clumps of brown material, etc?)

Have you checked the map sensor? If you are unsure of where it is located, do a search.

When changing the oil, did you notice any water / non oily substance in the oil?

Give more details, it will help!

you guys totally hit the nail on the head! i accidentally took off the map sensor hose. After i reconnected, it started idling normally again. thanks!

nothing i could see in the oil, nothing i could see in the coolant either.

I had some white smoke coming out for a while even after this, but i jumped in the car and drove it around the block and now no more smoke.

However, right when i was about to pull into my garage, a new noise came up, it sounds kind of like the whine you get in reverse, except it's definitely not the transmission (sounds even when i'm idling at stop), and not as whiny, it's more of a gritty noise.

Would this be because i have some air in the coolant system?
