nothing much has happend as of yet... im in the process of moving houses so i have to rent a uhaul, and trailer the car and motor, and all my tools to the new house. good thing is it is an empty 2 car garage with lots of space, so i hope to resume work sometime soon. im just a little worried about uhauling the car as i have never done that before.... and im not sure how im going to get it onto the car trailer cause they are pretty steep. before i move the car i hope to have the engine compartment painted, so ill be pulling the old motor/trans this weekend, clean out the engine bay completely, and pull off the fenders and bumper. ill take pics

Once you have the motor out, you and a friend will be able to push it on... otherwise, use a pulley on the front tow hook, or lower a-arm...

can you give me a break down of the costs thus far? do you recomend working with an already running FD or starting with just a shell? what parts need to be removed/added?

it all depends on how you are planning to set up the motor. if i were to start over i'd buy an FD with nothing wrong with it (maybe with a motor that is going to die soon) and start from there. i cant really give you a list of parts that you need to do this because every project is different. i really cant give a cost breakdown either as i am not quite done aquiring parts or figuring out what i will need. i am however logging everything that i buy in an excell file, and will post it when i am closer to completion.

Looks like your having fun. I guess we'll be doing very similar things to our FD's at the same time (20B transplant I mean). Keep posting pictures! I may need to reference this thread some day

dad was a good sport and helped me with the motor today... he rocks even though he looks a little crazy

thanks for the update and the great pics. please keep them coming. I don't see what you're refering to with regards to the damaged chasis. It looks fine to me. The hatch looks like it had a wing on it previously. Some careless owners like to open and shut their trunks using leverage from the wing. This could have lead to the warped hatch lid. Maybe you could clarify the parts of the chasis that you feel are damaged. It's difficult to tell from the pictures you posted. good luck.

ill takebetter pics of the damage.... i can see that the car was hit hard on the rear drivers side and i can see where they welded in a new pannel (i have a feeling thats why it doesnt line up well). anyway thats all aesthetics, but if you look at the bottom of the crossmembers a few pictures up it seems that they are bent. also i discovered that the floorpan (on both sides) is bent significantly upwards... i would be surprized if this frame is straight. this must have been quite a hard impact to the rear.

im just wondering what i will do if there is serious frame damage... i dont really want to spend thousands of dollars installing a 20b into a chassis that is damaged so i need to make some decitions as to what to do pretty soon (meaning keep it, or sell it and buy another) the disappointments just keep on rolling in with this thing

i dont know what to say but it doesn't seem bad check on every body part even wish bones brake lines bushings etc and try to find manufacturers sticker with item number on it or see if they look replaced (new)
that should give you an idea from where the crash was and what was replaced and check for rust, if you find rust it could of been pannel beated or exposed to water oxygen etc.........remember fds are galvanized!!!

isnt there profesional people that check for chasy movement.!!!!!!!!!

good luck

heath, dude ......lots of work ....KEEP GOING its starting to look like something ,as for the heavy fuel smell in the oil i am not shure but how many miles did this engine have on it .....i`ve seen this on an engine with bad side seals ,not shure if its the same problem but the oil would smell like fuel and it would even seem diluted (as if raw fuel was beeing mixed in it)
not shure if its related but ....

domestic: nippon-motors.com (i think that the site) they are in los angeles and i picked it up w/ a uhaul but they probably can ship

XS: one is toasted, and the other i need .... ill PM jeff and see if he will lend me his advice

Felix: first of all, if my car ever looks anything like yours i will wet myself, your car is outstanding! ok as far as the 20b motor it had like 65K kilometers on it ... im not sure what that works out to and im not sure what the condition of it is, but i suppose we will see once its in there . yeah the fuel wasnt really diluted, but blacker than ive ever seen any oil!! it must have not been changed for a very very long time

clayne: nope, not moved in. the rental agency took another couple at the last minute and screwed us bad (this would have been the perfect place to do all the work because of the enormous garage and yard) oh well. anyway, im still looking for places, so i just go home for weekends and work on the car and hang out with the fam.
