Hopefully we can put this tangent to rest (which I am guilty of spawning) and get back to BOVs, which I'm sure everyone is dying to talk about... yet again.

The factory BOV is open at idle and draws air so if you don't filter it you're pulling in unfiltered air. I verified this last night when I had the airbox pulled and started the car. You can easily tell the bov actually is an intake at idle.
I don't understand doing this "mod" though. Now you have a BOV that does exactly the same job the original BOV did except now it makes noise while doing it. I guess to some noise= teh hotness I have to say this mod is no different than 5" resonated exhaust tips attached to stock mufflers...

It should actually not be sucking, well unless your turbos arn't spooling nicely... at idle, your engine should be running hence your turbos should be spinning and some air should be venting (not a lot but some positive pressure should be behind your bov).
in anycase, i have never ever heard of anyone popping their engine because they sucked in dirt from their bov, 99% of the people pop their engine because they run lean when they over boost.

surgemonster may be onto something with the amount of engine vacuum as my motor only has less than 30k on it but I will figure it out. My boost gauge is teed into the map sensor line. Just for fun I will take a spare gauge and tee it into the y-pipe and see what the turbos do at idle on my car.
On my car with the airbox removed and the air pump running the BOV and primary turbo inlet were pulling vacuum. The prespool dump and the secondary intake did nothing at idle.

Wanted to clarify my post about my BOV drawing in air at idle. I checked again this weekend when my stock airbox was out and my BOV does nothing at idle. If I cup my hand over the primary intake and provide a restriction however I can make the BOV pull in air at idle.
So my BOV does nothing at idle either. It won't pull air in unless there is a restriction in front of the primary intake.
