my amphibious car update

Well, as i posted before my car was flooded by rain water. The insurance guy finally made it out to see my car. They totaled it. So here's where i need your help. The guy said my car is worth high 8's or low 9's. I don't believe it. I mean I know we all love our cars and probably over-value them...but I'd say ten at the least. I've got a 93 CYM, pretty mint condition. It does have 113K on the clock but the compression numbers were good (haven't check after the flood) and i've never had a single problem with the car (except pillow ball bushings) since i've owned it (for a little over a year now). Boosts flawlessly and pulls like a champ. So what would you guys say it's worth? Should i try pushing for ten?

I am taking the option of keeping the car though (since i don't really think it's totaled). I'll have a salvage title on it, but it doesn't bother me any since i WILL NOT sell the car. i just don't want to see another CYM be junk when it's still in rather good condition...structure wise. The car still runs...backfires...but runs. The only i see right now that need replaced is the padding under the carpet, everything else is okay. I do expect my motor to blow soon though.

When all is said and done: I'll have *their value of the car* minus the salvage cost (how much a salvage yard would ask for it) minus my deductable.

soooo. for example
cost of car: 8,000
salvage cost: 2,000
deductable: 500

8000-2000-500=5500....that's how much i'd get...plus keep the car.

What do ya'll say?

Do a search on here and print out some ads of comparable cars that had been posted for sale. Explain to them that the CYM are considered to be more 'rare' and tend to sell for more or something. You can prolly even have them contact a shop that specializes in these cars to have them verify that.

Also can you not negotiate on that 'salvage cost' any?

the salvage cost is not really negotiable...and that number was just an example...I don't know numbers yet. Except he said my car will be somewhere in the high 8s or low 9s.

Bullshit. Bring up KBB numbers. Look up forum classifieds, autotrader ads, ebay listings, etc.

You are getting tooled, don't let it happen. Your car is worth at least $15k being a real CYM.

This first estimate is a lowball figure. Just like anyone on the board wanting to buy something from someone, they hit you with a REALLY low figure and then work from there. If you take ads on autotrader.com plus the KBB value plus for sale ads on here, you show them that the fair market value is much higher than that. They WILL give you more after you show them that. If they don't, or don't come up with enough, you tell them that you're next stop will be to an attorney's office. You don't have to take it in the *** from them, you do have options.

Blue Book Suggested Retail Value
The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the vehicle has been fully reconditioned and has a clean title history. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the vehicle's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions.

Good luck and spend as much time as you feel is worth the money you'll make doing it.

Definitely let us know the insurance company and the outcome of the process. My car is a low yield investment of my money I don't relay on it to make me money but I would like to sell for at least what I bought and to imagine my INSURANCE not giving me what its worth would kill me.

You got my support let us know what happens!!!

Yup - there should be no reason whatsoever to accept less than blue book. I would actually try to get more if they are being this slimy: do a national Autotrader search for yellow FDs - most asking prices (mostly dreamers, but whatever) are $20k+ for the yellow ones - and print out the results to fax to them.

I would also look up the count of CYM's that were produced and sold to show how "rare" the car is. The insurance company won't know the difference.

Oh, and regarding the carpet, the padding is actually part of the carpet itself, so you will have to plan on replacing the carpet and the pad. I recall that Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda was running a special price on carpets a few months ago. I think it was arranged via GoodFellaFD or Wanklin.

A good/well-established appraiser can also help you.

If you need one, let me know.

I agree with the others that it's should be worth more than 8K but they aren't going to give you KBB value for it. The will be using NADA. KBB is frequently used in the retail market (dealership prices) NADA is more like whole sale value. I hope that you get more but if you can get anything above $10,575 out them I would say you're lucky. Very few cars on the street meet the excellent condition (like new) criteria and with 113K you're looking at average. If the car was repainted in there eyes it's not going to be considered excellent paint no matter what. The interior would also have to show no signs of wear.

Not trying to be a downer here but trying to provide you with some grounded info.

Good luck with the negotiations.
