Motor Time?

Went to Mazda today to pick up an A/C drier and some O-rings so I could fix my A/C and convert it over to r134 and when I went to leave, my RX-7 wouldn't start up. Now there is nothing more heart breaking than sitting in the Mazda dealership with your thumb up your butt trying to figure out what's going on especially when it's your RX-7. What's happening is the car is flooding everytime I shut it off even after a good 15 minute drive. I also own a 2nd gen RX-7 and I know this happens if you crank it up, move it, and shut the car off without letting it warm up but my 3rd gen is given the chance the blow off any excess fuel.

If it is a motor, who would be the best choice and with what options?

RX-7 Specs:
-93' Touring
-~98k miles
-Stock
-Manual Tans.

Symptoms:
-Strange smell out of the tailpipe ( not sweet )
-Easily flooded

Are you getting any smoke out of the exhaust?

There are other things that might cause this problem like leaking injectors, or other problem areas in the fuel system (fuel pressure regulator).

No smoke. Every now and then I would get a dark cloud that lasted 2 seconds if I got into it, but that's it and that hasn't happened in a over a month or two. Other than that that, the nomal condensation cloud when we had winter months.

Once it starts up, it seems to have good power except for an idle the hunts when the brakes are applied, a/c turned on, etc. I don't know if that's going to be the Alt./Batt. or the Idle Solenoid.

Well, the first thing I would do is get a compression test done. After that, you can see if it's worth troubleshooting or not.

If the compression is fine, I would start looking at the fuel system components.

O.k. Thanks.

If worse comes to worse, where would be a good place to have my motor rebuilt and what would my options be with a stock ECU?

It really depends on the amount of money you want to spend. You can get a Mazda remanufactured engine (basically, a Mazda factory rebuild) or have an aftermarket rebuild. This is one of the few times it's cheaper to go OEM then aftermarket. You can get a Mazda reman for around $2k where as most good rebuilds will be in the $3k range.

Just about everyone here on the forum will have an opinion on various rebuilders. If it were my money, there are only two places I would consider a rebuild from:

Pettit Racing: http://www.pettitracing.com
Pineapple Racing: http://www.pineappleracing.com/

Those are two of the more expensive places to have rebuilds done, but their work is outstanding.

As far as what you can do with a rebuild and use the stock ECU, I'd imagine you could do a small streetport. However, if you are going to keep the stock ECU, it really wouldn't be worth it as the stock ECU really isn't going to take advantage of the additional performance.
