motor rebuild and now rpm gauge doesnt work!!!
as it say's, i got my car back today and the rpm gauge doesnt work. he checked the connections to the coils or where ever the signal comes from. he also said that it cant be a fuse because one fuse controls all the gauges so all of them wont work. he tried to change the computer and same thing! i really need that gauge to work so any help is really appreciated!!!!!!!

is it located on the engine? if it is he checked it...... it has to be an electrical problem and how to i get to it?
he said he will buy me another one if its out but i dont want him to!

Why are you wasting time dealing with this? If it worked before the rebuild, then it's possible that the mechanic made a mistake somewhere. In any case, it should be their job to figure it out. I'm surprised the mechanic would even return the car to you like that...

he didnt say he isnt responsible. he said that he will try to figure it out. he just didnt have enough time because i went there to pick up the car a day early. he insisted that if he cant fix it, he will buy me one..... trust me, he is really cool about it! also, its a rotary mechanic so he checked the signal to the coil's and everything. he said the problem is from the tach....

I had the same thing happen to mine right after my engine rebuild. Literally the next morning the tach went. I tried fixing it to no avail, just get a new cluster (buy it used from someone on the forum) swap the tachs, so your mileage stays the same, and sell the rest of the cluster off. Don't bother trying to fix it, it won't get you anywhere.

You need to get a service manual and go through the steps to determine the problem. First you have to check to see if the tach is getting a signal, then you check to see if the ECU is getting signal, if it isn't, then it is the crank angle sensor. This is where the tach gets its signal from. If your mechanic doesn't know how to trouble shoot things like this, then I wouldn't take my 87 Buick Century there. Him telling you it isn't anything to do with the motor is just ignorant. PM Vel525, he had a similar problem after a rebuild, I don't remember if he has fixed it yet.

ok, can i swap out only the tach if i buy that whole cluster unit?? when i saw that in person, i thought that it is all connected and its all one peice?? can the tach be removed from the whole unit? pics would also help!

i have the auto tach that came out of the auto cluster. basicly my manual tach was bouncing, so i bought another cluster off a forum member, i put that cluster in and it did the same thing, so i put my manual tach mack in..therefore im guessing my tachs are good and its a problem somewhere else. let me know if you want the auto tach, the difference is the subdued p r n d and the 7k redline

built my own engine
don't listen to any of these people, the tach does not get it's signal from the crank angle sensor, that's utter BS
it gets the signal from the ignitor side of the ignition system, on the leading coil high dwell digital signal
it is a sin wav, not a square wav, so you cannot use ouputs from ignition amplifiers/CDI's
what is your electrical setup? (engine management, ignition system, etc, all stock?)

all stock..... i know i get the signal to the diagnostic's place because my remote start alarm learned its signal from there and we checked it with a meter and when i pressed the gas, the meter went up so its just the guage right?
