Mods vs. Resell value

If your car is in that good condition though, you might be able to get more for it if you put a motor in it; - then you could sell it with no "blown motor" caveats and honestly market it "showroom quality". I'd think you could get 15 - 18k for that after investing only 2000 or so.

exactly what i was thinking. gosh... decisions decisions, eh?
of course i'll be having a mechanic rebuild it, so it'll be more like $3000 or so for the rebuild.
i'm pretty confident in the quality of the car appealing to buyers when i sell it, though. literally the car has gone 105k miles without anyone even sitting on the leather seats -- it always had car seat covers. garaged every day, babied by some old guy. it's a little freakish but i like it.

Expect to spend more on the rebuild. I will hazard a guess that most rebuilds are closer to (or over, or way over
) $5,000 than $3,000. A broken solenoid here, worn clutch there, dead engine mount over there, old hoses all over, and it quickly adds up.-Max
perfect advice
leave the car the way it is right NOW..unless something failed like the precat or the radiator or anything really IMPORTANT, then replace it with the same oem part..but other than that, use the concept "dont fix it if its not broken"..
and you could get a bit more from your asking price if you get the rebuild BUT you will still lose money on the total cost..
say you wanted originally 13000 for your car, you spend a total of 4500 for the rebuild with labor..you will NOT be able to sell the car for 17500..
get it?
im trying to help out man

Bought for 13000, blow motor, sell it for 9000. Net loss of 4000.
Bought for 13000, blow motor, reman 4000, sell it for 13000, Net loss of 4000.
So this would be a wash. BUT it might be lots easier to sell the latter, and depending on the condition of the car, you might be able to ask more

IMO if I was new in the market for a RX-7 and had knowledge of what reliability mods were, any car that had these types of things done would be a definate plus even if I was looking for a lightly modded or completely stock car.
If you're worried about losing money on the mods themselves you could always pick them up in the forsale section and remove them when you sell the car and resell them in the forsale section for about the same price if you remove them when you sell the car.
And with a car for 105k, if you're looking to sell now may be a good time before lots of the worn out parts, such as the ones maxcooper mentioned in addition to the water pump, oilpan, injector cleaning, etc..., will most likely be required soon which can add up to a lot of $$$.
