Micrometer, Dial indicator, and telescoping gauge question

I've been reading up about the tools necessary for a rebuild. I have a question about the three tools listed in the subject. For each tool, what is the measuring range that is needed for the rebuild? For instance, micrometers come in all shapes and sizes. Some measure only 1" to 2", some measure 0" - 1", etc. What is the necessary measuring range for the rebuild? 0"-4"? 2" - 6"? What's the measuring range for a dial indicator necessary for the rebuild? 0" - 1"? What about the telescoping gauge? I hope I explained my question clearly.

The only places that I know where you use the dial gauge is to measure the step height of the side plate wear marks and also to set the end play of the eccentric shaft. For those measurements it's a small fraction of an inch so you need to have 0-1 inch (or less) travel with markings accurate to 0.001

I have a 6 inch travel caliper that I use on stuff and that's always worked for what I need (although for some of the measurements I guess a mic is the more proper tool to use).

Sorry, never used the telescoping gauge when doing rebuilds. I just say F it and put it together

Thanks for you input Wargasm. For those of you that have done a rebuild and used telescoping gauges, what sizes did you need?

i'm a machinist and i use those on a regular basis, unfortunatly i've never rebuilt a 13b and would not know the places those intrumenets would need to be used. A telescoping gage basically makes a T and they are used to measure the inside diameter of a hole. you squeeze them together first put them in the hole and hold it at a angle then release the two arms and then pull the gage up and it will give you the size of the hole then tighten down the lock and measure the arms with the micrometer. micrometers are used in different ways some measure from 0-1, 1-2 like you said but they only will measure one inch. you buy different micrometers with different arms and wala. lol. i'll get you pictures. and then i can explain better. i also have a dial indicator, the measurements for the micrometer are to the .0001 of an inch and the dial is .001. pm me if you ever have further questions and i will explain the best i can.
