Wondering if ppl who have the metal substrate cats (like KS Metalit or Catco) noticed any significant noise reduction? They seem to flow really well but my sanctioning bodies have lowered the noise limit down to 95dBA (thanks to the nimby's).

So instead of just adding something like a Magnaflow resonator in the midpipe for noise suppression, I'd use the met sub cat to also get the benefit of less stink.

Any opinions and/or comments?

BTW, my search results mostly in the effectiveness of the metal substrate for emissions but haven't found answers for noise.

I used the Random Technologies cat in my car. Doesn't work well for decreasing sound levels. It does flow quite well overall though.

A few people like Max Cooper installed the metal substrate cat along with a Magnaflow in the midpipe. NewbernD (sp?) also.

 

I have both a Borla XR-1 and a stainless cat in my midpipe, and a racing beat dual. I was shooting for "barely meeting emissions", breathing as well as I could and quiet as I otherwise could. It's really not bad until the wastegate opens. It drones a touch but is definitely better than a straight midpipe.

Yep, like Max Cooper, I did a metal-subtrate CAT with a Magnflow muffler/resonator and an old TRUST SP rear muffler.

She's quiet and not too bad when you're on it. Roebling Road also has a 95 dbA restriction, and I'm definitely quieter than some of the other cars out there!

RE Amemiya in Japan makes a few "dolphin tail" mufflers. This basically points the exhaust tip down at the ground, which some times will reflect the noise away from the DB meters at a track. I know that's why they designed it. Just FYI .

I have the KS but went from the stock cat to the KS....hard for me to compare.

 

I also did a metal-subtrate CAT with a Magnflow muffler/resonator. It worked great. I had the Apexi N1 single cat back. It didn't stink and wasn't too loud. Just perfect IMO.

I have 2 movies on my web page. Niether is really an exhaust sound clip but the longer one has an inside the car clip half way through where I ran WOT from 40 to 140. It wasn't too loud at all.

btw, the met-sub cats don't require the airpump, right? guess i'll be doing a resonated metal substrate cat.

the knightsport one has a hook up for it. I left mine attached to the airpump

 

Our rotaries run rich, so they need the airpump to help the cat do its work and not prematurely fail.

Mine is hooked-up to the air-pump.

When I ordered mine from smb I told them no **** pump tube...lol

I never had an issue.

 

Agentspeed....Where did you get the electric pump from again? I might need one for my cat.

The metallic-substrate cats do not need an airpump to survive, provided they are sized properly. However, you will not pass emissions in stricter states without the airpump hooked up.

In some driving conditions, I thought my hi-flow cat (Bonez) was louder than my resonated midpipe is (single Magnaflow).

 

Does anyone make a resonated mid-pipe with a met-sub cat pre-installed?

 

Not that I've seen for the FD. However, just go to a $20 muffler shop and they'll weld it all up for you for probably under $50.
