Mazda, ripped off.

They say...the only part you should buy direct from mazda is your thermostat as its the only part you wont get ripped off purchasing.... WRONG

They wanted $78 AUD (~40 US) for a thermostat. I said there is not a chance im paying for that.. so they said "ok we can give it to you at trade.." $50 AUD ($26 US)

What a rip off. what do you guy's pay for thermostats?

now to install the thing..

alternater brushes are for most cars 5-6 dollars per set of two, 3rd gen brushes are $19+ per each, you need two . The mazda company hates us all . We should all show our support for them and get old VWs.

When I bought the car, I couldn't believe that the parts for an FD cost more than my 93 BMW. I now try and find used parts wherever they may roam.

Honestly it all comes down to volume. They made very few of our cars for here in the US. Therefore they don't sell as many spare parts for the FD as they would for say a miata. Hence the reasons the parts cost so much. Really it's all supply and demand. That being said, it really is quite expensive to get parts for our cars.

Really, what do you expect the centercaps for the wheels are $40 US.

The funniest one for me was years back trying to buy a new rear end diff for my 85 gsl when I lived in West Virginia. No one had even heard of an RX-7.

"What kind of camaro/mustang/firebird is that?" grrrrr... Probably one of the reasons I hate those cars so much, and must hand everyone of them I see their ***.

I am going to get little stickers made up of a guy in an american car flipping me off. Then put them on the side of my car everytime I kill one of those bricks...

I don't remember what I paid for a Mazda thermostat, but it wasn't outrageous. Less than $15.

That is an OEM genuine mazda thermostat. But the dumb sales lady sold me a gasget also when it already came with one. It was a special order so it was a little more then 7. It was like 9 or something

No, that is $40 US per centercap. I can almost buy used rims in good condition for that price if I look.

Scrub. yeah but still. $9. Thats a good deal. no complaints there.

We should setup a section to trade/compare international parts prices. Add shipping to the price and we may have a few deals going on.

1500 for carpet.
80 to 100 for bushings (like a few bucks for ford bushings).

120.00 for the coolant overflow tank.
250.00 for the inside door wiring harness.

They just want to get there money back for all the warrany work on the 3rd gens.

ZeroBanger is correct. Although you can alleviate some of the cost by buying through Mazdaformance. These guys have the banner here at the forum. Typically they are 20% less than the dealership. These guys have always taken great care of me.

list price on a thermostat is like 15usd, the reatil price of any given part depends on any number of things.
1. import duties?
2. how good is mazda aus/usa's deal from mazda japan?
mazda japan needs to make money selling parts, and so does mazda usa/aus, they are not charity organizations to keep your 10year old car on the road (that would be nice)
3. how much the vendor charges mazda japan
4. they arent getting thier money back on warranty work, they paid $100 a bushing too

If you feel a DEALER is gouging you on prices, contact MAZDA Corporate and report them - DEALERS (all cars not just MAZDA) are INDEPENDENT franchises that set their own prices - if MAZDA Corporate finds a pattern of price gouging by a dealer they can (and will) cancel their franshise. I have found that some DEALERS charge as much as 100% over MSRP for parts and others only add like 10<>20% over DEALER Cost (Much less than MSRP)

Maxpesce is correct. Dealers are independent of the franchise. This is true for Nissans as well. Dealers are free to charge what they determine as market value (or what they can get for it). With that said, I have personally found dealers that charge 200 - almost 300% over other dealers. I'm not sure if Mazda corporate will repremand a dealership, but it is possible.

The only way to get good pricing is by comparison shopping. And the dealers that charge true "fair" pricing will get more business than others.
