mazda dealerships

ive been reeding up on some sites about rx-7s a little bit. most of them are saying that you should not take an rx-7 to a mzda dealership to have it worked on unless someone else in the area w/ one recomds them. i guess the mechanics arent trained well for these. when trying to work on them they might cause problems. i was just wandering if anyone had an opinion on this. and also i know there rare but does anyone know exactly how many 3rd gens were shipped here espiscaly a 94 r2? thanks

I went into my local mazda dealership to get some parts and as soon as i said RX7 the woman went and got the manager.

With the new RX8 the rotary mechanics are getting better but they still know NOTHING about the turbo control systems.

i would NEVER take my car to a stealership and i suggest you dont, however im religious about never taking any of my cars to dealerships/garages - i do all my work myself.

The problem is that in many cases, they don't know that they don't know it. The FSM simply doesn't do much to diagnose and solve turbo control system problems - the collective troubleshooting knowledge is from people who have dug in, figured out how it works, and essentially built their own troubleshooting tests and procedures. Mazda mechanics are generally pretty tied to the FSM procedures unless they have some seriously special knowledge.

In general, the rule of thumb is DO NOT take your RX-7 to a dealership. If you're lucky like I was in the beginning, you'll just happen to be close to a dealership that has employed the help of an old asian guy that was working on a Mazda before there was an RX-7. (who, subsequently eats a hearty portion of fried rice and german shephard for breakfast).

The answer to your second question lies in the stickies at the top of the 3rd gen forum.

Dude, you're in Jacksonville...that's Florida, right? There's a GAZILLION shops in Florida that are hardcore rotary specialists. Jacksonville is very far north, so you're real far from places like Pettit. Check the SE Regional section, and there's a sticky about Florida shops IIRC. Go to one of them. You'll find that they're cheaper not because the hourly rates are lower, but because they're experienced enough to quickly and accurately diagnose a problem and fix it immediately, meaning less parts and labor. Dealership's are doing the replace and check ie trial and error method 99% of the time!

not just mazda, i wouldnt take it anywhere that isnt a rotary specialist. **** with my fc i just had it at some shop for something or other because i was lazy and its just my fc (i love the thing, but i am a lazy **** sometimes) and they wouldnt even touch the thing. then i did have it at mazda for emissions related stuff and when they gave me my estimate i laughed and did it myself for lets see...like seriously 6 times cheaper than they told me...but the oe parts r hella expensive so its not all their fault...
