In the market for new SMIC

Amemiya has just released these 2 versions of a SMIC.

1.5 x original size $500
2 x original size $800

http://www.re-amemiya.co.jp/new_part...1_5_inter.html
http://www.re-amemiya.co.jp/new_part...s_2_inter.html

Both of these intercoolers look to be the same height as the original IC but longer. I don't know much about intercooler airflow dynamics, but somehow these dont look like they would cool as much as ASP,M2 or Pettit.

Another option is knightsports SMIC for $1300

I seriously doubt they would. By using horizontal end tanks, they sacrifice a good deal of surface area for convenience. Also, the additional bends on the piping will sacrifice flow as well.

My vote is for the knight sports unit, it has a bigger core then the re-a and I like the duct it comes with. Pricey but well worth it, blitz smic would be my first choice though but it is quite difficult to find.

leave the stock unit in there and add an A/I kit you will get much better results and cooler temps. if you have stock twins with A/I the stock I/C will be fine. just my thoughts

^ I have heard the exact same thing from very reliable sources (engine & turbo builders). good ducting helps too

love it when a company comes out w a brand new product for our 17 year old cars. (pretty soon they will be old enough to drink... actually i have been feeding mine alcohol/methanol/ for four years)

but i digress...

speaking of SMICs, i just received my new Pettit IC yesterday. it replaces an M2 ASP large. take a look at the beautiful new endtanks. it is all about flow and cooling and the ports are really improved.

then there is the fan which wires into fan relay 2. it will be a big help in traffic and on my 2 day upcoming dyno session where i test 4 turbos back to back.

i note a heat barrier material under the duct which works since the radiator is nearby.

as to AI V intercoolers...

the answer is you really need alot of both. AI works primarily under boost when Combustion Chamber temperatures reach insane levels. the IC removes heat whenever your motor is running. under boost, air entering the intercooler is often over 300 degrees. my M2 ASP large removes 130+ degrees from the incoming air greatly increasing the amount of oxygen molecules per volume and offering up more power and less motor destroying heat.

win win

ICs remove a crazy amount of heat and are an essential item, one that rewards not skimping.

i really really like the SM as it has small tube volume compared to a FMIC, doesn't collect road junk (just look at your oil cooler fins), and doesn't block air to the radiator.

Keep in mind that the "new RE SMIC" is from 2005 (take a look at the post dates). FWIW, it doesn't look like the stock airbox will fit with one.

just gonna throw this out there. Ebay SMIC w/ a fan and proper ducting. There's a 2.75 inlet/outlet and a 2.5 inlet/outlet version. plenty of folks are running them w/ no ill effects. I'm sure I'll probably get flamed for this but in my book it's the best bang for the buck in the I/C.

Neither of the op's options look any better than running the stock SMIC. I certainly wouldn't pay 1300 for an I/C that looks like a polished version of a stocker.

Howard's looks nice! But If it's priced like the other goods at pettit i'm sure it ain't cheap.

I asked Re-Amemiya about those intercoolers 2 years ago and it's based on a core exchange. You send them your OEM intercooler and it takes them about 7 days to create the new design.

If you're serious Ka Kui about buying it you can send an email to inukai@re-amemiya.co.jp

I opted out and found one of their GReddy style SMIC to use instead.

Running the stock SMIC with A/I like someone previously mentioned is not a bad idea either. This guy runs his SMIC with A/I and is putting down over 400whp...

Nicely sculpted end tanks. Why did it take so long for someone to create an add on plug-n-play IC fan? I guess Mazdaspeed never tested their cars in street traffic.
